I travel a lot. 140 days in 2014 and 110 days so far this year. I know what I like.
I stayed at the Econolodge on West Henrietta Rd. in Rochester from 6/8 to 6/12. It was OK but I won’t be going back. I’m really disappointed because I spent most of the last year watching these folks really work hard on this place.
What did I like? The room was completely refurbished and clean. The employees were friendly and helpful.
What didn’t I like?
Holes in the walls ranging from old cable service to open access panels to where the headboard use to be screwed into the wall. I really hate this because if a place does have critters (I’m pretty sure they don’t) these opening are a highway into the room and just leave me feeling like the room is unserviced.
The brand new heating unit is very loud. Even on low the fan would be way too loud to get to sleep. I was lucky that the outside temperature allowed me to get the room the way I wanted and then turn off the unit.
Excessively restricted shower heads. The bathroom was brand new with nice fixtures. However, I don’t think I have ever encountered such a low flow shower outside of the SW US. It just stretched out the time to get clean in the morning.
Ok, fans again. The exhaust fan in the bathroom was so loud it covered up my portable radio so I could not hear it in the shower. The shower water was not loud as it dribbled out.
When they renovated they did not replace the linen. I got several obviously clean but heavily stained pieces of toweling.
Great TV but lousy cable service. When I asked for a station listing they told me they could not generate one right now because of some problem with their contract with Direct TV. Geez, I missed Antiques Road Show Monday night! ;-)
Spotty WiFi. Two mornings I got up and could not log on to the WiFi.
Value proposition.
I won’t discuss price, it’s inexpensive. However compared to other places I stay at in the area in this class it just isn’t up to par. No hair dryer, no iron, no ironing board and worst of all no in room coffee.
Hey it’s clean and the...
Read moreI just needed a room for one night but honestly, its not the greatest but the bar is set "above Gates Motel" so that's something.
The simple fixes like the floor gaps and replacing stained shower curtains couldn't cost that much to replace/repair. The hallway is so boring, throw some paintings, pictures, flowers (fake, if needed) and colors. At night, I feel like two twin girls and a kid riding his tricycle from The Shining would show up at any moment.
As it goes with most 2 star motels, it always smells like cigarettes. People are gonna smoke regardless, the staff can't catch everybody. Its pretty much expected. But something could be done about the smell.
However, if you're like me and just needed room for a night on the quick and cheap, its not too bad. Just wash everything in hot soapy water after you check out.
Also, helpful hint: have your own personal set of "travel blankets" if you don't wanna use the hotel's bedding. I don't take off anything from the bed, the bedding remains folded on the bed. I just throw my own stuff on top of it, including covering the pile of pillows with my travel blanket and then my own pillows on top. After I check out, I go to a laundromat, and then put them away until I go to another cheap motel.
Otherwise, staff was nice and its not a total crap hole of a motel. The bathtub here is bigger than Red Roof Inn's at least.
I also suggest the motel to upgrade to smart tvs. Nobody watches cable tv. Other motels I stayed at have upgraded their tvs. People watch Youtube, Hulu, Netflix, ect.
I give it a rating of "meh, it is what...
Read moreBooked for three nights on hotels.com - arrived at the hotel and it was awful. There was a hole patched with cardboard in the room door, the "non-smoking" room smelled strongly of smoke and the first floor room's window did not securely shut. People were actively using drugs on the property and this is obviously a common problem because narcan is prominently placed in the lobby.
I checked out 15 minute after arriving but the front desk said they were unable to cancel my remaining reservation since it was booked through hotels.com. I immediately contacted hotels.com and they attempted to contact the hotel for over 48 hours before they were able to reach anyone. I have multiple emails verifying that hotels.com was actively attempting to contact the hotel.
The hotel does not have a voicemail and had a single person working so I think it likely that they just didn't answer the phone. When the hotel was finally contacted they only agreed to refund one night of my three night stay because they said I didn't cancel before 4p for the second night (even though I attempted to cancel multiple times).
This hotel should not be listed on third-party booking sites if those sites are not able to reliably contact the hotel when issues arise and won't allow people to cancel with them directly. I would strongly suggest not staying here and if you must, do NOT book through a...
