WARNING: UNETHICAL BUSINESS PRACTICES & HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! DO NOT BOOK the Delta by Marriott Virginia Beach for your wedding room block or any large group event! This hotel is completely unethical and actively manipulates reviews to hide its poor service. They dispute all negative reviews on WeddingPro (the parent company of WeddingWire and The Knot), which is why their ratings on those platforms appear misleadingly positive.
We hosted our wedding room block at the Delta by Marriott Virginia Beach for our wedding weekend (September 12-16, 2024), and unfortunately, our experience was disappointing from the start. We began coordinating with the property in February 2024, and while things started smoothly, the situation quickly deteriorated after the departure of our original point of contact.
Communication was an ongoing issue. Despite multiple follow-ups, we faced delays in receiving the booking link for our guests, which added unnecessary stress. The communication was so poor that we had to physically drive to the hotel and request to speak with a sales team member to obtain the booking link. To our surprise, the front desk informed us that none of the staff was available because the entire team was in “Customer Appreciation Training.” The irony of this situation was unbelievable—no one from the sales team was available to address our concerns (contractual customers) when we were physically on the property because they were in training about customer appreciation.
The issues continued when we arrived. The hotel is highly advertised as pet-friendly, which is why we chose to bring our dog. However, upon checking into our personal room, I discovered more than a dozen chocolate M&Ms scattered across the floor. As chocolate is toxic to dogs, I had to pick them all up to prevent a potentially fatal situation on our wedding weekend. It was evident that the room had not been vacuumed before our check-in, which was unacceptable and concerning for a pet-friendly establishment.
The problems didn’t stop there. Our room blocked encompassed 26 rooms, and a majority of our guests encountered dirty rooms, rooms that weren’t ready, and a lack of basic amenities like towels and washcloths. Additionally, despite paying to have our Welcome Boxes distributed, many guests didn’t receive them, and I personally had to remind the front desk several times. To make matters worse, one of our guests was given a Welcome Box meant for a different wedding!
The General Manager did reach out and was very apologetic about the issues. He assured us that these were isolated incidents, but that was hard to believe given the high staff turnover and problems we faced with nearly every department—sales, catering, front desk, and housekeeping. To me, this is far from an "isolated" situation. The GM tried to resolve things by offering Bonvoy points, which I appreciated as a good faith gesture, but it didn’t resolve the deeper issues we faced.
Even after speaking with the GM, who reassured us we wouldn’t face more problems, it still took over a month for us to receive the Bonvoy block points and elite night credits we were promised. Throughout the entire process, I had to stay on top of the hotel staff on a weekly, if not daily, basis to ensure things were handled.
If you’re considering this hotel for a wedding room block or event, do yourself a favor and book elsewhere. This is NOT a business...
Read moreThe stay was alright. I reserved here bc they had a pool and great ocean views. But both of those were a bit deceiving. The pool was soooooo small for the size of the hotel. The whole time we were there it was FULL of kids screaming and splashing. You could hear it from the rooms. Every chair was filled with a person and the pool was so chaotic. It was not an option for our family to go to. You would think for a hotel this size the pool would be at least 3Xs bigger to accommodate the guests so they can relax and enjoy the amenities. So if you plan on staying here. Count the pool out if you don't like to share bath water with a stranger or get splashed in the face by kids.
The ocean view was partial at best. You can't see the Bay from your bed or windows. You can only see it when you step out to the balcony. You can also only see it when looking past the pool. Soooo forget relaxing on your desk staring out listening to calm waves, noo you have to see wild children screaming and playing at the tiny pool first and it really distracts you from the calming bay or ocean waves.
Hidden fees. Be careful of their "resort" fees. $20. A night in resort fees where they force you with waivers to spend money at the hotel. But the catch is, the reatraunt is sooo overpriced you don't want to do to it. $39 for macaroni and cheese. (Seriously look it up) $40 for 2 crab cakes. We liked the idea at first to spend our $40 ( 2 night stay) at the restraunt, but once we looked at the menu we were kinda offended at the prices and just found local places to go and eat. Which we are glad we did, bc we found the restraunt 'Bay Local Eatery' which was amazing and highly recommend. We would rather support local anyways. At Bay Local my husband ordered 2 crab cakes eggs Benedict with some if the best hollandaise for $18. We never used our waivers.
The location is good. Dunking donuts is right next door. Walking distance to the hotel. Lots of eateries sprinkled around that have some goooood food. And there is Bay views. However I hear there is less than 3 rooms on each floor that have an actual full water view. The pictures are misleading.
The rooms themselves were great. Very clean. We loved the shower and beds. Lots of pillows. There was two sections to the room, one with a sofa bed and the other section with the king bed and dividing the sections was the bathroom. So each section has access to the bathroom without disrupting the other section. Which was nice. Love the layout. There is a hidden microwave and fridge. It's there in a cabinet. You have to look for it. And the showers are modern and have a nice argan oil shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Which I was surprised how nice it smelled and soft it made my hair. No shower curtains it was a glass sliding door. The bathroom door was also a barn style Frosted glass door. Which was super nice. Clean fresh carpet, nice towels and bedding.
The parking is atrocious, good luck parking yourself. There is only a small number of parking spots for guests to use themselves and you still have to pay $24 a day to self park. I got my yukon stuck in one of the side parking lots and almost couldn't get out bc it was so narrow. So we ended up just paying for valet the last night, valet Is only $28 a night. So why not. You can text the valet when you want your car with 5 mins notice. I like the idea of texting than calling. And the valet team were always quick, knowledgeable and friendly.
When we checked out on Sunday 1 hour before checkout, there was 3 people in line at the front desk and one receptionist. I like to get a receipt but after waiting almost 10 mins I just dropped my key cards and left. You would think on a Sunday at checkout time they would have more staff checking people out.
The pics show your actual view...
Read moreDO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL! This hotel stay ranks in my top 3 of worst hotel stays EVER! I can't believe this is a Marriott property. I get a corporate discount so I typically stay at a Marriott property and this was such a huge disappointment for a hotel that costs $352/night with my discount. My friend and I arrived Friday night, August 23rd and check-in initially was smooth as normal. Upon entering the room, we thought great it's a nice size room. The issue occurred when we got in our room and started wiping down with our disinfectant wipes. Then, I noticed a washcloth in the shower hanging over the shower curtain. I asked my friend did she use a towel to wipe down the bathroom and she said no. We both said well if they didn't remove this towel; they likely didn't really clean this room. We go down and speak with the Manager on duty, who was, Jaime Cruz-Sosa. He apologized and assigned us another room. We walk up to this room and the door was ajar. We were already frustrated and didn't want to be a bother and go back down to ask for yet another room. So we started disinfecting once again. There were crumbs and stains on the couch in the living area. We said oh well we likely won't be sitting on that anyway. We get to the bathroom and there was toilet tissue still in the toilet!!!!!! I can't make this stuff up. Now, I'm pissed! We go back down, this time Jaime says I will go check this next room out myself before assigning it to you. All of this took up at least an hour or more of our time and we had plans. We missed the first night of the event that we came to town for because of all of this transpiring. The other young lady at the desk offered us free breakfast vouchers. Jaime offered 1/2 off the first night, late check out and told my friend to come back to see what they could do for night 2 for our troubles. The room we wound up in wasn't much better but at least it didn't have obvious signs of not being cleaned. The mirror light didn't work. We had used all of our travel Lysol wipes on the first two rooms and asked if we could get some for the 3rd room. Nope, we had to walk across the street to Rite Aid and purchase our own. You have to push a button on the fridge to keep it cooling. I think it was 2 hours at a time. The issues that I encountered during this stay were absolutely ridiculous! I will NEVER stay here again and perhaps not even at another Delta location at all due to this experience. I was told that the House Cleaning Managers, were Cathy Williams and Dominique Burton; they both need to manager their cleaning staff better. Lastly, we come back from the beach because we were told that our late check out time was 2pm. We go back to the room at 1pm and had been locked out. I had to go down to the front desk to get my key updated to gain access. When I tell you that the back to back debacles were unbelievable. When checking out, I told Keith, that I would be writing a poor review and he seemed unconcerned. This hotel is far to expensive for the issues that we encountered. Please spend your hard earned money elsewhere. The beach wasn't great either. It was a dead stingray on the beach on day #2. I've never experienced anything like it. A hot mess is putting it mildly! And location wise it wasn't much in the area. But it was about 20-30 minutes away from the Boardwalk. The breakfast buffet was very basic as well. I honestly can't think of one positive thing about this hotel and I'm trying....HORRIBLE! So to be clear, for all our inconvenience, we received 1/2 one night and 2 free breakfast buffet vouchers LOL we still paid $30/night for the tight parking spaces and got locked out after being "accommodated" with a late check out....
