A Mixed Start, But an Absolutely Unforgettable Family Getaway!
Camp FIMFO truly is a wonderful, perfect spot for the entire family, no matter the age! There is genuinely something to do for EVERYONE, and we loved the vast array of activities available.
Our arrival, however, got off to a rocky start. Upon reaching our site, we were met with a significant mess: at least 30+ Heineken bottle caps scattered across the grass, burnt patches, chicken bones and meat surrounding the picnic table, large and soggy dog food pebbles stuck to the cement, a large pile of what appeared to be vomit on the cement, and crayons throughout the grass. Given that check-in is at 3 PM and we arrived at 6:30 PM, we were upset that the site wasn't ready, especially after a 5-hour drive.
I immediately called the front desk, and they quickly dispatched two young men. Unfortunately, they arrived unprepared with just a plastic bag, and seemed disinclined to fully assess the mess, with one even staying on his phone watching videos. They said they'd return, but after a 20-minute wait, Jonah arrived instead – and what a difference he made!
Jonah was absolutely amazing! He worked incredibly hard, diligently cleaning our site to perfection, even battling an approaching storm. He was highly apologetic about the state of our site and assured me he would inform the morning crew manager (as he was on the night crew), emphasizing that this should never have happened. He took his own pictures to ensure the morning crew was aware. Jonah was incredibly kind, professional, efficient, and genuinely cared, personally scraping the stuck dog food and working to remove the vomit. He truly set the tone for the exceptional customer service we received from every staff member afterward.
We have teenage kids, including one with special needs, and I can't stress enough how absolutely amazing and high-spirited the entire FIMFO crew was with them throughout our stay.
My husband and I particularly appreciated the Hill Top pool. It was incredibly peaceful with a beautiful scenery overlooking the surrounding hills. The gas fire pits were a fantastic touch for s'mores (never too old!), and we loved that it also had a swim-up bar, just like the main pool. This pool offered a perfect, relaxing break from the lively energy of the water slides and younger kids.
The range of activities is incredible: the Alpine Coaster, water slides, mini-golfing, pickleball, tubing in the river, zip lines – the list goes on and on! We only wish we could have fit it all into our four-day stay. Our next visit will definitely be for at least seven days!
OMG, I cannot forget about the absolutely clean bathrooms and showers in the RV sections. They even smelled remarkably good, as if there was perfume in the vents – a great touch that really made a difference!
Thank you, FIMFO, for an otherwise incredible stay. We look forward to returning VERY SOON and were proud to add our FIMFO sticker to our RV's collection!
P.S. During our water slide rides, we observed staff allowing children who appeared to be no more than 2 or 3 years old to ride with their fathers, clearly not meeting the stated height requirements. There were other young children riding with adult supervision who were also visibly shorter than the guidelines allowed. Please have a conversation with your staff about the potential dangers and consequences of not adhering strictly to ride rules. While parents may permit their children to ride, they are often quick to shift blame onto staff if an incident occurs, potentially leading to legal action. This is just a quick tip for safety...
Read moreLet's start with the positive. We had an amazing time at Camp Fimfo. We coordinated with three other families who have kids the same age, and adults and kids alike had a great time. There is something for all ages at Camp Fimfo. They have heated pools and hot tubs, so swimming is accessible in all kids of weather. Our kids brought their bikes and scooters, and had a blast cruising around out front of our cabins at night while the parents socialized on the sidelines. The roller coaster, pillow jump, gem mining, and ropes course playground were other hits for kids around age 6. We discovered the river access area late in the game, but that would be awesome to do on a hot day. Bring an inner tube! My personal favorite thing was to get up early and cruise around the gorgeous 450 acre hilly property in the golf cart with the whole family (including the dog) and a cup of coffee. We will definitely be back.
Now for some constructive criticism that I hope they will take into account. We came during peak time, so our cost was high (including pet fee and golf cart rental it came in a little over $2K for three nights). For that price, I expected a little more luxury than we got in terms of service and accommodations. We got there early, but could not check in until 4pm. Okay, fair enough, it says that on the website. They told us, the room might be ready at 3pm. Came back at 3pm and it was still not ready. Still fair enough. But then at 4pm there was a huge line to check in. I got up to the front right after 4pm and the room still was not ready. I was kind because I could tell the four people working the check in were totally stressed an overwhelmed. While I was waiting off to the side I heard them tell several other families the same thing. I felt so bad for the poor front desk people. They were busting their butts and looked so stressed. It was peak check in time/day during Spring Break, so it's probably not like this most days, but it was a total cluster. Then we got the room and the toilet was broken. We could flush it manually by lifting off the back lid, but it ran constantly. I waited until the next morning to call in a work order around 8am. Was told someone would come by and fix it. I went out and about and enjoyed the day, but when we got back around 4pm that day it still hadn't been fixed. I called again, and this time they did send someone who fixed it quickly. No one apologized or offered any small perk (throw me free roller coaster ride or something, you know?). They were nice, but just not apologetic, as I would expect. We didn't have dish soap (you are supposed to do your own dishes). Our friends in other cabins had some provided. The coffee pot is the least intuitive coffee pot known to man. Same to the heating and cooling interface (both units need to be on the same setting or it doesn't work). We didn't have any instructions for anything. Our friend's cabin did have a magnet with some check out instructions. Also the loft stairs in the willow cabin are so steep and don't have rubber grips on them. Be warned if you have young kids who love to climb. I just got the impression they were not staffed properly for the peak season. Hopefully they're still just working out the kinks of what I think is a relatively new place. Overall would...
Read moreA Stunning Property But Not a Safe or Welcoming Space for Black Families Camp FIMFO in the Texas Hill Country is without question, a beautiful destination. The grounds are scenic, the amenities are plentiful and well-maintained, and the overall environment is set up to create fun and lasting memories for families. I was especially impressed by how many activities are included with your stay: mini golf, the pool, water slides, yard games, and more. The cabins are clean and well-stocked, and the property itself is visually stunning. That part is undeniable.
But as a Black woman who brought four young Black boys (my son and three nephews) for a birthday celebration, I cannot ignore or minimize how uncomfortable and isolating this trip has been.
We were the only Black family on the property during our stay out of what seemed like hundreds of families. And from the moment we arrived, it felt like we were on display. Every time we entered a space whether the pool, the playground, or just walking through the property we were stared at. Not in a passing glance kind of way, but in a way that made us feel like we didn’t belong. Like we were being observed. It felt like we were part of an exhibit, not guests on vacation.
That alone was difficult. But the moment that broke me was when a child approached one of my nephews at the pool and asked him, “Are you a monkey?”
That level of ignorance and racism should never happen anywhere, but especially not at a place that markets itself as a family-friendly destination. My children deserve joy, not trauma. And I paid the same good money to be here as every other guest. But I didn't feel treated with the same dignity or humanity. The staff weren’t outwardly rude, but they also weren’t warm or welcoming. It was clear that we were seen, but not acknowledged, and certainly not embraced.
There was also a safety issue that really disturbed me. At one point during our stay, I didn’t have cell service and my partner couldn’t reach me. Concerned, he called the front desk and asked if someone could stop by my cabin to check on me. They refused. They claimed it was a “domestic violence policy” and said they couldn’t do a welfare check. But it left me wondering if it were a missing child or any other “typical” concern, would that same excuse have been used? It felt like an arbitrary decision that lacked both empathy and consistency.
Here’s the truth: I would not recommend Camp FIMFO to other Black families, especially not alone. Maybe if you’re traveling with a large group or a family reunion where you have a visible presence, the experience might be different. But for a single parent or a small Black family, the isolation and discomfort just aren’t worth it.
It’s heartbreaking, because the place itself is truly beautiful. But beauty doesn’t make up for a lack of belonging. And belonging matters. Safety matters. Representation matters. I won’t be returning and I hope Camp FIMFO begins to think more intentionally about inclusion, cultural awareness, and creating a space where all families can make happy memories without fear,...
