Excellent Tango-themed show with experienced dancers and live music backing them up. in small venue within Faena hotel in BA. Went for dinner and show - my advice is skip the dinner. Details below.
Pros : excellent service with caring staff - depending on what you book they’ll send a polite driver in clean car to pick you up and drop you off (don’t be cheap, too the guy, and everyone else!) Wait staff was excellent as was hostess. Endless (low end) wine and sparking wine and they’re not stingy about it which is nice. Venue is nice (no where near opulence or size of Faena theatre in Miami so don’t expect the same). Made fresh tea after dinner from fresh ginger and mint which I always appreciate. They genuinely care that you’re happy. And most importantly the dancers and musicians are great - I think time were actually truly “couples” in real life too. Dinner is about 75 minutes and show is about 75 minutes immediately following dinner (enter at 8pm leave promptly at 10:45pm). The point of the event is the dancing and music - they get five stars in this department.
CONS: food. Of course I don’t expect great food at this type of venue but it wasn’t even good …. starters of octopus carpaccio (slimy, warm, soft, pungent ) and burrata (if a hockey puck could r white this would be it) - mains were decent and i think they worked extra hard to make sure our mains were decent because they were (again) genuinely concerned I wasn’t m happy with the starters - so kudos to the excellent staff - but they need to step up the game on the food. Of course Faena in Miami isn’t any better even in their main restaurant (horrific).
The only other comment I would : educate the ignorant tourists who are talking during the show. I was shocked that out of the small number of tables (less than 20 tables in entire place) at least half were talking loudly during the show. It’s a show it a bar - incredibly disrespectful not only to other guests but to the hard working performers and staff.
This can be curtailed by explaining to guests ahead of time : no flash photography and no talking during the show.
Unfortunately the show just started with no instructions from staff so we had to endure the stupidity and rudeness of several guests around us even after I requested they not talk during the performance.
Overall a great evening but the only reason to have dinner there is to get a better seat but there isn’t a bad seat in the house - better food...
Read moreI cannot recommend Rojo Tango because the price exceeds the value. I attended the performance and dinner in March of this year. The food was OK, with an overcooked steak and a chocolate dessert that was tasteless and plastic-like in consistency. The service was attentive and wine flowed throughout the evening. However, good service and nonstop alcohol cannot make up for subpar food.
Furthermore, while the dancing was polished and professional, it all depends upon where you are seated. I was seated by myself at a table on the stage with the band. The venue is quite small, and the fact that I was on stage with the band meant that I could not hear the singers very well. There was also action to the right of the stage that I could not see because of columns in the way. The main problem, however, was the fact that the people in the front row cut off any view of the dancers from the waist down for everyone seated behind them. Tango is a wonderful art form, but you only get half the story if you see the dancers from the waist up. You need to be able to see the quick footwork and that was impossible from where I was seated.
The price of my ticket for dinner and the performance was $260 and I would not pay that again. Because of the seating, I don’t think I would pay for a performance only either. In my opinion, you’re better off paying $95 to see just a performance at Piazzolla where the stage is set high enough and you can view the dancers from any seat at...
