A security guard here said that if I made out with him, he would let me in to see the capybaras.
I was walking outside of this rowing club on the riverside on Jan 18th in the afternoon since I heard a lot of capybaras are hanging out here. Although the rowing club was closed and only members were allowed inside, I was still happy to watch those giant cuties from a distance outside the gate.
Inside the gate, a person in a security guard uniform was walking along a trail. When I stopped to take photos of the capybaras from outside, he approached me and asked if I wanted to go inside to see them. I thought, Of course, I do! He said, “Você fica comigo, aí eu deixo você entrar.” Using Google Translate, I understood this as, “You stay with me, then I will let you in.” I assumed he meant I should stay with him and not wander around on my own, which seemed reasonable.
So, we walked to a spot where he could unlock the gate and let me in. After retrieving the key, while unlocking the door, he asked, “Você vai ficar comigo ou beijar eu?” This translated to, “Are you going to stay with me or kiss me?”I was shocked and confused when I read that. I tried to clarify what he meant a few times, just in case there was a misunderstanding due to the translation. Unfortunately, he did mean exactly what it sounded like. When I said no, he locked the door again. While he did that, I managed to take a photo of his ID.
After consulting my Brazilian friend, I went to a police station to try to report the incident. After hearing what happened and reviewing my conversation with the security guard, I was told that this is not considered a crime in Brazil since there was no physical contact. The staff at the police station explained that this behavior is considered normal and even tried to compare it to someone approaching me at a bar.
While I understood that they couldn’t take action because it’s not classified as a crime here, I still emphasized how inappropriate and unprofessional the behavior was. It’s unfortunate to hear it being dismissed as “normal.” The only course of action I had was to report the security guard to the rowing club where he works. I hoped that it would make a difference. Unfortunately, I haven’t heard anything back yet. I sent the email to the HR department’s address that I found on the club’s website. I received a response saying the email had been forwarded to the club and that the case was closed. Since then, there has been no follow-up.
I was disappointed because I initially thought the security guard was being kind, and I felt lucky—capybaras have a way of bringing people together. In addition to finding the situation itself disgusting, I also feel bad that capybaras, being so cute and innocent, ended up involved in a...
