Beautiful Jacranda tree bloom in South Africa.

There are an estimated 70 000 jacaranda trees in South Africa. 50, 000 of them on the streets of Pretoria alone, turning the city purple when they flower in October and November.

First imported to Pretoria in 1880 from Argentina, the jacarandas, which are indigenous to South and Central America, were initially planted along city avenues and then found their way into gardens. In his famous memoir Long Walk To Freedom, Nelson Mandela wrote about how they offered a brief escape at lunchtime during the Treason Trial. ‘Those moments under the shade of the jacaranda trees on the vicarage lawn were the most pleasant of the trial.’

The trees, which consume a lot of water, have been classified as an invasive alien species in both SA and Australia. The blooming jacarandas have found their way into the cities mythology. Students joke that if you haven’t started revising for the end of year university exams before the jacarandas start to bloom, then you’ve probably left it too late!

I first came across this store when I moved back to Canada in 2021 after being away 10 years. I’ve always been a supporter of small businesses and entrepreneurs and had to furnish our house outside the city. The items here are all very individual and special and over the years I would purchase special items online only and delivery was always quick. I finally went in for a visit before Christmas this past December and met the super duper mom daughter team. Such a beautiful store front and location. It was so nice to put a name to a face in meeting Sara and her mom. I continue to purchase regularly and was able to cross off so many from my Christmas list as their products are so varied. Love love this special...
