We go to H-Mart in Richmond's Aberdeen Centre, and were surprised to find this one on Dunbar. Parking is underground from the rear lane. The main difference I found is this location does not have as much ready-to-eat options as Aberdeen which makes sense as it is not as big. H-Mart is interesting, being a Korean-American chain, in that it carries products made in Korea, Japan, and China. If you cannot read the symbol language, just check on the front or back for 'Made in xxx'. For example, in one of my pictures you can see Japanese Style Somen made in China. There are always some surprises especially with snacks/sweets-Peach Oolong Oreos?! I am a fan of the Kirin Kitchen drinks and H-Mart is one of the few stores I can find the Salty Lychee drink. The proteins are very good, especially the meat. We often buy thin sliced beef for Korean and Japanese dishes. The quality and style of meat/trimming is worth the cost. The variety of kimchi is great of course-I did not know there were so many options. We buy a lot of Japanese dry food and Japanese condiments from H-Mart. They also carry beauty products/toiletries, along with small appliances. So rule of thumb is check 'Made in xxx' before you buy, if that matters to you. You could buy each product in country-specific supermarkets but it is nice to have products all in one...
Read moreMany unpleasant encounter with the rudest / disapproving cashier later… here’s their zero star rating.
It seems that most the staff here are bi-lingual speakers in Korean & mandarin (or mainlanders fluent in Korean?) regardless, every time I make a rare visit to the hmart dunbar it seems that the cashier really hates her job.
My encounter this weekend left me slightly baffled, offended as a paying customer and triggered me to write to Hmart. Experience as follows: Saturday afternoon quick trip for a few missing ingredients for dinner, finished shopping, proceeds to cash, small total but I only have one big bill to pay with, cashier asks if I can pay in another way and I say no with cash in hand. She takes my bill and under her breath expresses that I’m “pissing her off” in Chinese tosses me my change.
I leave baffled not knowing how to react - did I really take that from a cashier ?! Apparently yes. Highly recommend avoiding this hmart at all cost to save yourself from an unpleasant experience with people who obviously hates their job second to not know their place...
