Have watched three times here----all horrible experiences.
Location/Parking It's rather far out in the Bahnstadt. There is a tram stop now that is near enough (Gadamerplatz, for tram 26 or 22). This is great, although on weekends and late nights, trams will only come every 30 min. If you bring a car, parking is crazy expensive, and they don't even give complimentary parking or a discount when you watch a movie. Also, the entrance to the parking area is so badly planned it is almost stupid. You have to take a very tight turn to get into the underground parking area, and so drivers go very slow, which causes a very long line. There is also almost no option to park in the surrounding area, which is mostly industrial or construction sites. Taking the train all the way to Mannheim would probably be less stressful and more convenient.
Movie choices They have very few movie choices in English. Considering Heidelberg is such an international community where almost 25% of the student population and residents come from abroad, this could have been a great opportunity to finally cater to that crowd. However, the OV movie choices are very limited, and usually are only set at very late/odd viewing hours.
Pricing and Ticket purchasing Tickets here are more expensive than in other chain Kinos. It also costs more to buy tickets online. You can get a discount when purchasing online, but then you have to have their cinema card, which costs money----in other kinos like Cinemaxx/Cineplex, these cards are free and you can load them easily online as you want. Not so for Luxor.
Service The staff are not friendly, and also, the place is always undermanned. There is one line for the tickets, but the snack counters also sell tickets. However, since snack lines are always busy, and the staff need to fill in orders for drinks and food, it makes the line to buy tickets sooo long. And because there is no incentive to buy tickets online (extra cost and horrible website), people usually buy at the kino.
Overall look/feel/atmosphere The movie memorabilia are pretty cool and add a nice touch. The aquarium they boast of was just executed poorly. If this were going to be the biggest kino aquarium, they could have designed it better. There are only super tiny windows where you could see the fish. There is a cool amphitheater-like seating area, but if you sit there, you will see more wall than window/aquarium. Additionally, the dark blue lighting makes the fish so hard to see. Moreover, they boast of having a shark in there, which is a horrible idea, as sharks should never really be kept in an aquarium as small as that. And when you do see the shark, it looks really small, sad, and poor. Would have been better to have a move visible aquarium teeming with aqua plants and different fish than a huge empty one with one shark and small windows. Terrible really.
Gutschein They do not take the MovieChoice KinoGutschein! This kinogutschein you can often buy as a present or you can get as a Payback Card reward has all major cinemas and even smaller houses in Germany. But not Luxor. I think it's really sad that this company has chosen not to include themselves in this deal.
So overall, this Kino was long-awaited, and could really have been Heidelberg's premiere multiplex Kino. However, it's a failure overall, and I can see why they seem to sell a few tickets and why other Heidelbergers hate this place. If you want to watch a movie in Heidelberg in German or English, you're better off supporting the Kamera, Gloria, Gloriette, or Karlstorkino. And if you want the Hollywood blockbusters, especially in English, you can forget about this place and head to Mannheim instead to Cinemaxx/Cineplex, where access is easier, online purchase is easier and cheaper, there are more choices, and they take the...
Read moreThis was far from a good movie experience.
There was no air conditioning and the room was very hot.
The sound quality was not the best, and the rooms are so poorly insulated that we could hear the sounds from the movie playing on the room next door. This was very distracting and infuriating at some point. We went to see the 15th year special of Coraline, and I could not enjoy the lovely soundtrack of the movie because I kept hearing the sounds of explosions and loud music from the action movie in the other room...
To add insult to injury, for whatever reason the lights on our room were turned on 10 min before the end of the movie. I found this to be extremely unprofessional.
They also have a 10% price fee if you book tickets only (this is just ridiculous...). They do not charge this fee if you buy ticket at the location, even if you buy them some days before. These kinds of fees are completely unnecessary and should be illegal at this point.
The only pros I found are that the cinema was quite clean, and the chairs are very comfortable. The staff was nice, and they have a lot of options for movies in their original language.
Overall, I can't really recommend this...
