Santhanam Sweets, which is adjacent to Commercial Street, is a small sweet shop with lack of seating and can get pretty crowded at times, but for their credit they do make pretty good pastries and sweets, and apparently they have been doing this for a long time which is always great to hear.
I have to detract a star for the ambiance and location. Not necessarily the interior itself, but rather the dilapidated and altogether seedy area where it is located. It was a five-minute walk — with hands full of bags acquired from an unintentional shopping spree — coming from Commercial Street, but what a walk it was. Straight down a crowded street with trash and rubble and pop-up stalls everywhere, even motorbikes and auto rickshaws going down the same street! So much noise and honking and ruckus and rubble-strewn environment and so insanely crowded, the five minutes soon felt like a half hour walking down a dark and decrepit alley! I had to give way to a motorbike more than once, for fear of getting run over. All in all, horrible and seedy location for a sweet shop, but once inside one can breathe a sigh of relief!
If being honest the place does not seem like it has AC, but during night it was pleasing in appearance and there was much light and it was pretty crowded and lots of people clamoring for sweets to buy, which is a good sign, because it means that the place is popular.
There are a lot of sweets and pastries on display here which is what I like to see, however a minus is that a lot of sweets and pastries on display are not labeled at all, so we have to ask the counter-person what everything is, or in our case to save time, how to locate so-and-so sweet and help in identifying it.
We picked up a few sweets: Ladoo — it was just ok. Mysore Pak (ghee) — get the one with ghee base, trust me. It is more fat because it is made from pure ghee, but it tastes really good. I liked this Mysore pak overall. Sone Papadi — tastes like the traditional sweet. What else to say then it is done right, as it should be. I liked this sweet, as it is done well and tastes good, but found myself preferring the Pak slightly more.
We also picked up some nuts and the spicy snack variants, not sure what they’re called, but more specifically we also had the popular one and also Congress I believe it’s called, that came with a lot of spicy nuts mixed in. To be honest, I haven’t tried this yet.
All in all, good bang for the buck, all together it ended up costing us less than 300 rs. for the three sweets and the snacks, which was surprising!
I recommend getting the sample size and mixing matching whichever sweets interest you. Two of each in the same box should do it.
I liked at least two of the three sweets we got, and I’m glad about that! The only minus is the ambiance and location, as mentioned it was altogether too seedy for us and would liked to see a more upscale location. However, the sweets and pastries themselves were pretty solid, and I would recommend others to check this spot out if they are close by in the Commercial Street area. They have pretty good sweets such as Mysore Pak and Sone Papadi! Try them both out, and any other ones that catch the...
Read moreWorst behaviour by few staffs... Papanna is a cheat and fraud! We took catering services and ordered food for 70 plates for a small function (minimum 40 plates as per their policy) They give a list of menu and we got to check (✔️) on whichever items we needed. It was decided n clearly discussed on price, service charges and labour charges. After the function he was quoting for 80 people and was demanding money 10 plates extra!!! We we reconfirmed he was very rude raising voice n tried to use words! He spoke as if we was ignoring n was giving away money for charity or to beggars! We gave him left and right and honestly paid the said amount! Also when we went for the first time, we were not sure on the payment, billing process. For whatever we ask, few counter executives were weirdly smiling at eachother n looked weirdly at us... They were treating us very badly, as if we were fools. Not sure if they have completed 10th standard or PUC by qualification... But the attitude is on sky! We felt very embarassed n walked out! No civic sense... What use of the showroom? They are in...
