it used to be sooo good. a little bit pricier than other takeaways, but the food was slightly higher quality.
that's changed.
they're not including rice with the curries anymore! you have to order it separately now, which is insane. didn't realise this at first and ended up cooking my own rice at home. and the goan prawn curry I got just tasted like a tin of tomato purée with a bit of coconut milk and a few prawns mixed in.
the chips used to be nice, fresh, and chunky. now they're using dunnes own brand cheap skinny chips. you're better of buying a whole bag from dunnes for like €1.50 instead of buying a portion from here for €3.50. it's literally the exact same chips.
there's no raita with the food anymore either :/
and a service charge! it's only 40c, but it's mad to be taking a service charge for reading my order off a computer system for 30 seconds. those are for wait staff in restaurants on their feet all day.
used to be one of the best restaurants around but it's gone downhill. I know they've got to cut costs with the cost of living crisis somehow, but no rice with the curry unless you order it separately? I don't think adding some rice to the curry sauce I paid €14 for is going to cost you much. actually insane. the website is not clear about needing to order rice separately either, so you only find out after receiving your food. why you think this is a good strategy and you won't drive away customers by charging them €14 for sauce, I don't know.
it gains 2 stars instead of 1 only because I'm sentimental enough to look fondly on the days when this place was worth the...
Read moreI stumbled upon "Flame of India" by chance as I browsed Just-Eat one night. I noticed that the address was the same as "Spice Cove", therefore it is now known as the latter.
I ordered myself a set meal of Chicken Madras with Pilau Rice, which came with a complimentary Naan Bread, Starter (Chicken Tikka, Pakora or Seskh Kebab) and Poppadoms. Initial impressions were great. The driver was friendly, and the food was fairly warm, and the portion size was excellent, and far more than other takeaways. Despite them being large, the portions were full of flavour, with lots of sauce, meat, spices and fresh herbs. The Naan tasted homemade and had the flour baked onto the bottom, with oil slightly left on top. The Tikka starter was full of vegetables and flavour, again with decent amounts of meat. There are certainly no half measures here.
I will most certainly be ordering from Spice Cove again, and I will be recommending it to friends and family. Despite the fact that the takeaway also sell 'traditional' chip shop offerings like pizzas and burgers, the food is clearly made with love and care, and beats many of the other big name restaurants around the South Dublin area. My Madras, which was spicier than most, was perfect in every last bite. The value of my meal was far more than I would have expected.
It really pays to shop around. Now, however, I won't need to look any further.

Read moreThe worst Indian food I’ve ever eaten. The curry and masala sauces were syrupy sweet and had no spice. Sweet and bland. You’d be better off using the sauce on a pancake for breakfast. I’m American and maybe that’s the issue. I called the “takeaway” and the fellow indicated this wasn’t authentic and that this is “British Indian.” This was the second restaurant I’ve eaten from that the front door was in fact a garage door. Pure slop. Oh yeah, and when it comes out the back I hope it’s not cold outside because you’re going to need some windows open in the house to air it out. Otherwise, the toxic gas may end up burning some nose hairs or peel off your wallpaper. I thought about vomiting it up after my meal and really wish I had. If you want some authentic Indian food in Dublin, try Pickle. That’s how Indian food is supposed to taste. Do your wallet, tastebuds, and intestines a big favor and avoid this place...
