Hokkawa Onsen — Local services in Higashiizu

Hokkawa Onsen aka Kurone-Iwa-buro offers three open-air baths (rotenburo) on the edge of the Sagami-nada Sea, Shizuoka, Japan.

The two mixed baths (Konyoku) are lined with rocks, with an open changing area for guys.  There is a round-shaped ladies only bath with an enclosed changing area. Ladies will also be provided with a towel to wrap themselves in the Konyoku bath.

For ¥600 per adult, one can enjoy the Onsen from dawn to dusk. Guys have to leave the Onsen by 19:00 hours as it will be converted to a ladies only Onsen. The Onsen closes at 21:30 hours.

I simply love this Onsen. I love soaking in the hotspring waters, watching and listening to the crashing waves. On a clear night, I can see the moon peeping at me.

Personally, eventhough the ladies have their own rotenburo, I prefer to use the mixed rotenburo with my partner anytime!

This is my third visit and many more to come. Enjoy the Onsen amidst the crashing waves! (^.^)

Psst! I was told by a Japanese, as the onsen is at the edge of the sea, the bather should be one with nature, and the correct way to enjoy the soak is to bathe in the nude....

A small and very simple open air bath right against the sea. Waves are visible from the back of the bath, and islands on a clear day. On really rainy days the sound of the rain mixes with crashing waves and it's beautiful.

In both 2023 and 2024 there was no mixed bath as older reviews say. The men's side has two pools, with big rocks surrounding them. The women have only one pool. The men's side is visible from the sidewalk along the seawall and from many apartments and even the train station, but you'd need a strong zoom.

Bathroom and towels are at the convenience...

Very public onsen. You may let people saw when you’re naked but it very enjoying while soak in the onsen hearing the wave from the sea and facing the sea. That was really enjoyable!!

If you staying in Caren group hotel, this onsen is complimentary.

There is no changing room over there and no towel provided just easy going onsen. Take off you clothes put in the basket and then using a pipe to fill up the water from the bowl and make a quick shower before entering.
