Osaka Itami Airport — Local services in Itami

I was really impressed with Osaka airport in Tokyo, also known as Itami airport for its service, shopping, and decor. From its cute airplane mascot stuffed animals to the colourful moss mural, it brought life to the airport, which can be cold and lifeless.

The shopping had interesting stores with great gift option, wonderful food, including soul satisfying noodle soup and ramen, to lovely treats. Gaming chairs at long tables and the sheer variety of seating and tables options was also a lovely touch and greatly appreciated.

I was also shocked to see staff physically catching the luggage on the conveyor belt so the bags didn’t drop and get damaged. A woman was there right away when the conveyor belt started and caught the bags until another associate came to take over. That just doesn’t happen nowadays and it shows how much the staff cares.

I also appreciated the Halloween decorations and the real plants that made the airport a living place. The Itami airport is not just a place to get on a plane, but a lovely way to explore and experience...

Not necessarily the prettiest or fanciest airport in Japan but this is definitely a well organized one! Right after claiming your baggage, just go one floor up (2F) and head to the train station (follow the signs): you'll get to see all the machines to buy your prepaid card (ICOCA in Osaka), book your train seats and retrieve your JR pass (the office can't be missed!). The entrance to the train platform is just located in front of the JR office (a 7-eleven ATM is available there to withdraw cash). SIM card options are offered as well as buying your JR pass: for these, just after claiming your baggage take a right!

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I didn't hate transiting through ITM when traveling back to Tokyo on my recent Japan trip. With JR prices up the roof, flying became the more economical (though challenging) choice, and going through ITM was well worth the effort.

Train access from Osaka via their subway and monorail was painless and much easier to reach than the likes of KIX. Train terminals were clean and efficient as you'd expect in Japan.

The airport was small but felt so modern and updated compared to regional airports I've experienced. They have a lovely food court opened early where we were able to enjoy some udon before out flight. Security was efficient, gate areas were clean and tidy, and the staff were friendly.
