Andy's tour is perfect for anybody looking to explore a more local, intimate side of Tokyo through food, culture, and (of course) bicycling. Andy is knowledgeable, professional, and very easy to talk to. He did a great job checking in on his guests at various points throughout the tour and sharing interesting historical/cultural anecdotes and tidbits throughout our 3.5 hours together. My favorite parts of the ride included the pit stop at the fishing pond for gobo karaage, the view of Koenji from an elevated vantage point right before we stopped at Horinji (Buddhist temple), delicious kishimen at the standing noodle bar for lunch, and, funnily enough, the visit to an underground churinjo (bicycle parking lot) before we embarked on foot to Nakano Broadway. It'd also be remiss of me not to mention the absolute joy of riding a Mamachari...they're fun and have a ton of character!
I think this tour is best suited for folks that have at least a casual degree of comfort and ability on the bike (e.g., the ability to maintain control while riding in a straight line + dexterity and confidence turning right and left + avoiding road obstacles like traffic bollards + controlling speed via handbrakes + situational awareness of other riders/people/cars). You definitely don't need to be an avid rider to take this tour. Outside of my weekly Peloton-ing, I hadn't actually ridden a road bike outside in...years! But I felt fine and comfortable on Andy's tour because he's a great communicator and ensures that everyone is well cared for. Riding behind Andy is the best and safest if you're a nervous rider. He does a great job scanning the road, communicating potential obstacles to you, and notifying the group of oncoming traffic.
All in all, an A+++++++++ 10/10 experience. I've already recommended this tour to all of my friends who plan to visit Tokyo and will definitely re-book with DIG Tokyo Tours the next time I'm...
Read moreMy husband and I had a fantastic time cycling around Tokyo with Andy. It was great to connect with a local and we saw tons of things we never would have seen while exploring the more touristy areas of Tokyo on our own. Andy took us to a bunch of his favorite spots and made sure that we were well fed with snacks! We tried a really delicious curry-stuffed savory-doughnut-thing which was a huge (pleasant!) surprise, and a bunch of other little Japanese delights. Andy struck a great balance between leading the tour to places he knew about and tailoring the experience to things we said we were interested in. We mentioned, for example, that we hadn't tried soba yet, and he brought us to a little gem of a soba spot where we capped off our afternoon with some yummy cold noodles--the perfect thing on a hot July day!! Andy was easy to get along with and we genuinely enjoyed hanging out with him the whole time. He was waiting for us at his local train station when he arrived and was quick to pick us out among the small crowd. He made sure we were fitted correctly to the bicycles before we set off, gave us a few tips about cycling in Tokyo, and made sure to check in with us throughout the ride to make sure we were comfortable and the pace was working for us. Everything was seamless from start to finish. If you are in Tokyo and want to see the city from a new perspective, and hang out with a super cool guy, we can't recommend this experience with Andy...
Read moreMy sister and I took the Tokyo West side and Food tour with Andy late May 2025. I’ve been lucky enough to travel to Tokyo a few times and the West side is an area I have never explored and probably wouldn’t have without the tour. First things first, if you think this is a food tour in the sense that you cycle to different places trying out different types of food throughout the tour - this is not that type of tour. It’s definately more of a neighbourhood tour with some food. You’ll need a moderate amount of fitness and experience on a bike. We used Mama Chari bikes that have no gears. Luckily the majority of the route is flat with some gentle slopes. Andy is a great guide he is very safe and warning you about potential hazards (cars, people). He was also mindful of stopping in shady spots as we were cycling in 30 degrees heat which I was most grateful for. I learnt a lot about Japanese culture and it was interesting getting a perspective from an ex-pat. I also liked the experience of local food provided by local people. The only suggestion I would make is it would be good to be able to stop for photos in some of the places.
The tour was what was described on the website and I found Andy extremely responsive over email and he was flexible when I asked if we could change the date.
Would definately recommend . Whether you’re a first timer to Tokyo or whether this is your 4th time.
Thanks Andy it was lovely...
