Karamunsing Shopping Complex — Local services in Borneo

Decent but not comparable to Kuala Kumpur malls in terms of overall prestige. A lot of items are cheap though. Foods, men's shoes, men & women's clothings, musical instruments, computers & gadgets. There is a music shop with plenty of choices for guitars, drums, other percussions etc on 1st floor. An old but well-maintained men's shoes shop located at ground floor near the lifts. A variety of computer and gadget shops including repairs & spareparts located at 2nd & 3rd floor, much like Sungai Wang, Low Yat & Mara Digital, all with reasonable prices. The chicken rice are tasty.

Watches are sold at ground floor near entrance and lifts. Ty There is a shop selling household items from refrigerators, tv, washing machines etc at ground floor and lower ground. Sajamas Taylor, specialized cobblers, stationaries, school & occupational uniforms, books & gifts are sold at lower ground floor. A Giant retail store at ground floor. Its amazing how almost everything are offered under one single mall which is not very big in size. A nostalgic place that I've visited often...

Karamunsing Shopping Complex is the one of the oldest shopping complex in Kota Kinabalu (along with Wisma Merdeka and Centre Point) located between Bandaran and Sadong Jaya. It's a go-to destination for electronic buyers and tech-geeks, as there are lots of tech stores that sell laptops, computers, televisions and phones for a hefty price. There are also McDonalds and KFC fast food, a food court in the basement (one of the oldest food courts still operating in KK), and also bakeries/patisseries (one located at the food court). The iconic Karamunsing lift is still functional and still has that same old 90s feel to it. There are also quite a number of old shops selling stationery, local maps, boutiques, toys, and school stuff. It has that bit of everything you need compared to newer luxurious shopping malls in Suria Sabah and Imago. Maybe come shop here once in a while and enjoy some of that old 90s shopping experience right here at Karamunsing...

Overall it's similar to Plaza Low Yat in Sabah. I recently visited this New Star economy rice shop in Karamunsing food court expecting to enjoy some economy rice, but it was way too expensive! I took bambangan, sweet and sour pork, and butter chicken—small portions costing RM17! I also bought rice with two vegetables only (no meats) - RM8, which felt very expensive and unreasonable.

When I asked the aunty how they calculate the prices for meat, she went silent and simply waited for me to pay, leaving me frustrated. The food was just average, and I noticed the owners—a husband and wife team along with one worker—trying to attract customers, yet no one stopped by.

Given the prices, I would have been better off at a higher-standard restaurant like Kopi Ping Cafe at the main entrance. Overall, I cannot recommend this economy rice restaurant at all. My experience was quite unsatisfactory. Extremely bad. Can try other stalls in...
