Carla and MeExplore did a great job on our tour, and went above and beyond in making it a great experience. Prior to our tour, they provided us updates since a storm was going through, so they wanted to make sure that we were aware that the harbor might be closed so we didn't drive up if the tour was going to be canceled. They notified us it was a go the night before (and told us it could be choppy, so be prepared).
The day of the tour, they were super organized, and they had decent equipment for anyone that didn't have their own snorkeling gear. My wife and I took ours, but if I were to do it again, I would just use theirs since it was in good condition and would have saved us a lot of space. Carla explained the whale shark environment, how we would search for them, the rules for swimming near them and how we would break into small groups of 2-3 to swim with them so they were less likely to be spooked. We saw other tour boats going by with 12-15 passengers, and ours only had 7, so I think we were all getting more swimming time with the whale sharks.
Once we found a pod of the whale sharks (there were probably around 12 in the general area), Carla would take the lead, and call the guests over in their groups. It was hard to get a good picture since it was choppy and the water was murky, so I was really happy that Carla was also taking pictures that she shared with everyone after the trip! Probably could have skipped taking my camera as well and just enjoyed hanging out with the beautiful creatures.
After we finished with the while sharks, we happened across 3 humpback whales (Carla said this was complete luck as normally they do not come that far up), and they were jumping and playing 150 yards off the boat. We hung out and watched them for about 30 minutes, which turned out to be more whale time than we had on an actual whale watching tour!
Overall, their concern for both the customers and the wildlife was evident and appreciated, and I would highly recommend the whale shark tour with...
Read moreThis was, hands-down, one of the best orchestrated wildlife tours I've been on, and you get so much bang for your buck. Rodrigo was incredibly helpful guiding me as to what tour(s) would be best to do, and he was super communicative from the first time I reached out via email with questions to the day of our tour when I called him to let him know we were stuck in traffic.
We opted to swim with both whale sharks and sea lions, and there were about ten of us total in the group. Our guide, Francesca, was not only knowledgeable about the marine life but she was also very engaging and made everyone from kiddos to retirees feel welcome. Although it took a little time to spot a whale shark, it was worth the wait as we ended up swimming with literally over a dozen in the area. After spending time snorkeling with the sea lions, we had lunch on Balandra Beach. Rodrigo's father makes the ceviche, and it was the best ceviche I ate the whole trip. Honestly I would do the trip again in part because of how good the ceviche was.
Also, fun fact--Francesca had a GoPro and took a lot of great images and video of the day which she then shared with the group. While we had our own GoPro, honestly, I was relieved someone else had one and knew what they were doing because not all of my footage was BBC documentary material.
We were fortunate to have our own vehicle to get from San Jose to La Paz, and although it was a bit of a haul (about a two and a half hour drive), it was worth every cent, and we are already looking at planning our next trip with...
Read moreOur experience with Jaime & Capitán Archibald was absolutely amazing! Jaime was super knowledgeable, really helpful and patient with new people and anyone not confident with swimming. Capitán Archi was also great and very safe! The whale sharks were so awesome and snorkeling with the sea lions & the reef area was fantastic. Lunch was yummy too!
10/10 we actually tried to add a different tour to Espíritu Santo with them while we were down there but the timing didn't work out. The other tour company we used was good but in comparison fell short so I'd definitely recommend these guys!
For us plus sized people they had up to XXXL for wetsuits and I surprisingly only needed a XXL (6ft 330lbs). The other tour company must have had a different brand or something because we had to go without wetsuits for their trip.
Also side note that is probably not relevant to many people but as a nonbinary transmasc person I felt really comfortable. Everyone basically just treated me like another typical human with zero comments on a person with a beard needing to wear a two piece bathing suit lol Any trans person can attest to it being really nerve wracking both socially and safety wise to not know how you'll be received in general but specifically in situations where you can't hide behind clothes.
Anywho it was a once in a life time magical day and absolutely worth it. We booked our whole week to La Paz just for the whale sharks and we were blown away...
