Best resort course I've played. Best Pete Dye design I've played, including Sawgrass. Sawgrass by far has more history but I love eccentric type.golf..as in all scale.mini golf if it exist. Dye made the mounds so high near the green you truly feel.like you've discovered a lost treasure on some.holes as you approach the flag. Deep cavern valleys, mounds blocking view that you get the feeling you meandering through mangrove forest. Soft sand bunkers.
Good rental equipment. Good staff.
Great layout routing. You only see other holes 3 times during round. Number 9 is signature where you see a pyramid..all be it the Maya hotel but still neat.
Water is present but not in play. Visual effect only.
What done it for me is not just alleys and mounds...deep valleys and tall mounds. As in probably a 20 foot drop in some crevices and 15 foot high mounds blocking flag view.
Designed well because if you hit to the proper area you'll get a flat lie everytime. The approach shot you must take the right distance and hit straight over obstacles. To major turning or working of the ball requited. Juat hit straight and know proper distance to go.
Without club rental I would play again but $100 for club rental is pretty steep. $150 for golf is right for this...
Read moreWe just got back from here. Golfed a total of 9 rounds over 6 days. I was a bit worried after reading some of the reviews. This was an excellent golf club/course. (It might have just been the timing of our visit).
The staff are really nice and professional. The people in the starter/finishing area are very nice. They cleaned our clubs each day and we stored them at the course (which was a lot easier than lugging them around to and from our rooms). Cart came around around every 3 or 4 holes.
The course was very well maintained and the greens rolled true. I would say this wasn’t that challenging of a course. It wasn’t so tight that it was punishing and water didn’t come into play that much. Length was good. If you do not keep it in play. You can sometimes find your ball but you have to hit it off the gravel, which might or might not be okay for the wear and tear of your clubs. You definitely need to keep your ball in play at this course. The jungle is often to thick to try to look for your ball.
The course is right beside the shopping mall with really good tacos. You could walk there for lunch.
If you’re planning on golfing a lot. There are 3 and 5 game packages. I didn’t know there was one, we would have only saved a...
Read morePros: Beautiful course. Very well-maintained with maintenance staff out working constantly. Pro-shop and course staff were very helpful. All-inclusive aspect of free drinks and food in the clubhouse is a nice bonus. Fun wildlife sightings with a family of monkeys and tons of coatis.
Cons: We were there at the end of July and it was otherworldly levels of heat and humidity. The course had water stationed around and a frequent drinks cart, but no sport drinks like Gatorade or Electrolit. We had to stock up at the resort shopping center nearby prior to our second and third rounds. Additional pro-tip: play yellow or other brightly-colored balls. White balls that stray from the fairway and rough are VERY difficult to find in the light-grey volcanic rocks around the course. Bring a bunch of your own, because the course is much less forgiving than it looks in pictures and they don’t have a big selection in the pro shop. Finally, the greens. The greens were very, very slow. They were cut too long, and the grain of the grass dramatically affected puts, which did not hold their line over short distances, making putting...
