We were on vacation with a larger group of 12 people. For our last night together, we decided to conclude our fantastic vacation with a dinner at the beach where we had spent so much time. Makai was our restaurant of choice.
Being conscious of how a restaurant, especially on a busy Friday night, might struggle to accommodate a group as big as ours, some of us went to Makai at noon to reserve tables for us. We were told that we had to agree on a maximum of four different starters and order both the starters and the main dishes in advance. The table was reserved for 7 PM, and we were told to be on time.
We made sure to arrive five minutes early, in high spirits… but our good mood quickly evaporated.
Despite the staff’s efforts and their apparent engagement, the evening turned into a complete disaster that tainted our entire vacation. No one knew about the preorder. We had to order everything again. We waited an agonizing 1.5 hours for the starters to arrive, and the main course didn’t come until another 45 minutes later. Some of the dishes we had preordered were unavailable, and the portions were insultingly small. The food was utterly mediocre.
To add insult to injury, we repeatedly received the wrong drinks or drinks we never ordered.

They now have a full on new kitted out kitchen with restaurant, all the tables and the interior are still brand new and need some wearing down—which we’re sure will happen soon enough at the eco-conscious surf community.
There is a solid menu to chose from, the food comes in good portions, the type that will keep you floating (or dragging) for a while if you end up at sea without your board. It’s kid friendly.
Keep in mind that the staff are surfers first and servers second, so don’t be surprised if they get your order just wrong, the food will still be just right.
