Every year we wait patiently in anticipation for the Bluff Oyster season to open, just to get a taste of this famous New Zealand seafood delicacy.
It is a belief of many MÄori people that the sea and it's bounty is a great Taonga, Tuku iho-a treasure that has been passed down from previous generations. For that reason, it must be looked after to pass to future generations. MÄori believe that by being good kaitiaki (guardians) and adopting sustainable practices, the ocean will continue to provide for many generations to come.
MÄori hold great respect for the ocean and often refer to the atua or god Tangaroa, the spiritual guardian of the sea. Before ocean voyages or before fishing or gathering of seafood (kai moana) MÄori recite karakia (incantations) to ask Tangaroa for a safe and prosperous trip and to give thanks.
