New World Hastings — Local services in North Island

Worst experience this morning. I realise full well we are in lockdown, precautions etc. But not one of the main checkouts open for cash payment? Last time I looked it was still legal tender. Was sent to 12 items or less checkout. This with a full trolley. The friendly young man here first started to tell me I was in the wrong place, but stopped when I said I had been sent to him. I then emptied the trolley, but the space for stacking your items before and after scanning is tiny. A staff member put an empty trolley out, but that was all. All during the maybe 15-20 minutes in which I emptied my trolley and put my items into the empty one, 3, sometimes 4 staff members were standing a few metres away, chatting, one on her phone, just doing nothing. Because of the depth of the large trolleys, I had to stretch my back several times, I am an visibly older person, but no one gave me a hand. I have started to notice this more and more: staff members standing around doing nothing. The men are the worst, just strutting around looking important. I ask for help at times to get something from the back of a bottom shelf, and most of the time you get a look of "don't bother" me. Don't expect them to help out of their own initiative, they just walk past or look on while you are struggling away. I am also wondering why prices have not gone down a little, now that staff doesn't need to do packing at the moment. As for the exhuberant prices of fruit and vege: just drive down towards Havelock and you will see 3 vege shops where prices are at least half of what you pay at NW.
