If you're going to Stewart island, visiting this establishment is simply a must.

I think it's partly because I'm British but I love a good fish and chips, so as you can imagine, in such a seaside location, I was very eager to try.

I ended up going twice which tells you all you need to know, both of which times I got the battered blue cod.

Just. Wow.

Blue cod is quickly becoming one of my favourite types of fish and if you don't agree with me, then I'm sure the battered blue cod will sway you.

Tender, light, creamy and most of all, incredibly fresh, (both times it was practically odourless, showing how fresh it was.)

In addition, the batter of the fish was pretty much perfect, not too thick or thin, not too soft or too crunchy. Letting the blue cod shine front and center while still adding that all important texture.

(I have to give extra props for them for dusting the fish with a little bit of rock salt)

Out of either the chips, (which I had the first time) Or the potato wedges, (which I had the second,)

The wedges were the clear winner.

Crunchier, fluffier with hint of spiced seasoning, they are the way to go in my opinion.

Having heard great things beforehand, Kai Kart certainly delivered, I'll be making a bee-line towards there when...

Absolute rubbish. Really expensive, poor quality ( chips bearly edible) tiny portions. I can't believe the blue cod fillets were legal size when they were caught, they were that small. Had to ask them to wrap them again in paper so that they wouldn't fall out carrying them home. Spent nearly $100 feeding 4 adults and 4 small kids.. Looked like it was being run by 2 clueless backpackers From the hostel across the road. Can't believe the other reviews . We're at 33 Dundee Street ( for a week ) if owners want to discuss this. It's Sat 20th Jan My recommendation is to get blue cod and chips from the hotel and have a piece...

I stopped my vegetarian diet during the days I was here just to try this and had no regrets at all. The grilled blue cod was divine, perfectly seasoned and cooked. Just a small fillet really but it’s fresh, not frozen. They change their opening days every week though, so you wouldn’t know when they will open next week until you see the board every Monday. I found this out to my chagrin when I planned for lunch there based on a previous reviewer’s photo of their opening hours - the days were swapped when I was there. Chips are pretty standard, nothing fancy. The vegetarian burger wasn’t too bad either!

Arrived more than an hour before closing (6:15pm) to find them already closed. This happened on Friday, so I tried again on Saturday with the same results. Google Map hours are wrong. I tried calling ahead to save me the journey, but their listed phone number is disconnected. It’s a shame because the one time I came by and they were actually open- their fish was amazing. Would have loved to eaten here again, but won’t get the chance now.
