It's a bit like walking through an estate of tiny houses where all the residents are asleep with the curtains drawn. A scene made a little more unsettling by the Saharan sand laden clouds creating a sepia tint on the day of my visit. The architectural variety is wonderful: everything from rigid classicism to holiday home fun. I found it interesting that most mausoleums do not list the occupants or, if they do, give the date of death. So if you are searching for relatives there is no visual clue. The area covered is vast. Every available space is filled and there is no grass or planting to break up the expanse of stone. Trees though are thoughtfully planted through holes in the roads giving shade that must be...

A stunning cemetery that captivated me with its incredible attention to detail. The breathtaking mix of neo-Manueline mausoleums and Art Deco tombs creates a mesmerizing architectural landscape. I found myself lost for hours, wandering through its maze-like paths. This hidden gem is a must-see for anyone visiting Lisbon. It’s perfect for a peaceful morning or afternoon stroll, offering a unique perspective on the city’s history and artistry. The free entrance makes it an accessible...

An extraordinary place! A town of miniature palaces inhabited by the dead. Each one tells a story, with the family photos and visible coffins on shelves inside the tombs. There are stories of the fight against fascism and the (fairly) recent dictatorship in Portugal. We learn of a different attitude to death and the respect and veneration shown to the dead. A must-visit if you are in Lisbon.
