I had my first feature length 4D cinema experience tonight. What is 4D cinema you ask? Well basically a 3D cinema, they then put the seats on hydraulics and add feed some pipes to the back of the seat in front of you. Above head on either side are some big fans that look like plastic bins and one or two strobes.
So the movie we watched was Aquaman. Note the reference to water in the name.
So the movie starts and the seats begin jiggle about which makes you grab your drink before it's flung out. And then the wind starts howling to simulate the gusts of wind happening in the movie. There is a little smoke machine in the front row too.
Now this is when it gets a bit wild, the chairs start to throw their weight around, there is now lightning flashing and thunder crashing. Suddenly a wave in the ocean crashes and from one of the little pipes in front of you comes a thin jet of mistified water. The other blows air in your face and below your legs.
Oh and another one of the four dimensions is which is called scent but unpleasant smell would be a better title. It smells was somewhere between rooibos and toilet air freshener. Luckily the big fans made quick work clearing it out.
All of these are perfectly snychronised with the action on the screen, two and bit hours or being terrified like a misbehaving cat that a water spray is coming soon.
My only gripe from an experience point of view was the theaters sound, it wasn't nearly loud enough.
As for the movie, it was extremely cheesy but the effects were great but I don't think I would watch it again or the first time had it not been for the 4D experience which made it an interesting experience.
Quite pricey but if you have teenage children or adults it's worth the R175 for...

You earn 10 points for every Rand spent. Plus if you are with absa or sanlam or multiply it offers even better deals and rewards throughout the week. They also offer a 2019 calender which allows you to get free items on the basis of purchasing another item but is well worth it. It also offers a popcorn section called poptia where you can receive and buy popcorn of various flavours usually gourmet flavours. The normal section offers popcorn, drinks and sweets. The combos are pricey and usually come in medium size and to upsize can cost approximately between 5 - 11 rand. The vip section offers food to be served in the cinema as well as alcoholic beverages along with reclinable seats within the cinema. Numetro pavilion also offers ladies only movie night as well as pre screenings. To book a ticket you may do it online or at the automated computerised systems at the venue. It's easy and simple. Remember to have your clubscene...
Read moreThis was the most disappointing 4DX experience I’ve ever had. I used to love NuMetro’s 4DX at Pavilion. I watched Jurassic World 2 and The Meg here and both were incredible: large leather seats, a big screen, full 3D, and immersive effects that made the movie feel alive.
But this time for Jurassic World Rebirth, it felt like a cheap knock-off. To my shock, there was no 3D, it was just a regular 2D screen with a few basic effects. The seats were smaller, joined in groups of four, and barely moved unless the scene was really intense. They didn’t even move during the trailers like they used to.
The fans used for wind effects were so loud they drowned out the dialogue, there were no bubbles or proper lighting effects, and the “smells” were completely off (why does the ocean smell like pine trees?).
I paid extra expecting the same immersive 4DX experience I used to rave about. Instead, it was underwhelming and not worth the price. I wish I could get a refund, and I won’t...
