Our date was spoiled. We got to the restaurant they took us to a wrong table and the waitress went back to check whilst we were standing and everyone looking at us, when she came back with the book we couldn’t find our names, she said we must follow her to rectify the situation. We were told we had to wait for an opening and while waiting we must sit at the bar, ok not a problem. We get to the bar there is only one bar stool there and we are two and the waitress was like there is nothing I can do one has to stand, like seriously? You don’t know when you’re going to get an open table and you are saying one can stand? She then said go and wait outside then. You know it was very embarrassing, it’s like we had come for a free meal, being dragged from one place to another. We then went out and took a walk on the shopping centre and came back after about 10-15 min later. We met a lady manager at the door she couldn’t recognise us but she was there when we first arrived, I had to explain again what had happened, I have never met such a very rude person like her. I was so disappointed. She had the audacity to blame us why we didn’t just stand and wait at the bar even if there was no bar stool for my partner. Whilst she was still ranting the other waitress came and said she found a table we must follow her. We then sat but our evening was already spoiled worse it was our anniversary. The waitress who first came to serve us ( Melody I think) even saw how frustrated I was and asked if she can give us a few more minutes. We sat here and the waitress in a red dress just brought cutlery while holding it on the part which goes in the mouth, how disgusting and she just dumped the cutlery and went, mind you that is the same waitress who took us to the wrong table when we first arrived. Fortunately after she dumped her cutlery the other floor manager a guy buy the name Kenneth saw how frustrated we were and that the lady just dumped cutlery and left, he came and was so calm and asked us our order and apologised for everything that had transpired, he really tried to rectify the situation. He took our food order and promised to put back our smiles on and surely he did that. Him and the waitress Melody really came through. But as for the lady who is the manager she is the worst, what irritated us most is she didn’t even bother to apologise for the inconvenience but instead was so rude to us like it was our fault that our booking was not found, not even to come later to check us if everything was okay after that debacle. Grateful to Kenneth and Melody they kept on checking on us if...
Read moreRestaurants that come with a pedigree are a little rare in Jozi, because we are the city of trends and fast fashion. It's always the next best and shiny thing that catches our attention in the city of gold. Hussar definitely has the history and the pedigree, as evidenced by the clientele, it is an older crowd, who enjoy their meals and wines at a leisurely pace, and that's the whole vibe. We never felt harried or pressured to leave, which is lovely. Staff (or ambassadors) as they're called here, do a sterling job of making you feel welcomed, are attentive and certainly add to the experience overall. A special mention must be made here for Andy (manager) who went above and beyond in assisting us with our 'cake fail'. Thank you Andy, you made our celebration truly amazing! Now onto the food. As you can see from the photos the plating is finessed, although a little minimalist, but that's so that your attention is drawn to the food immediately. My sirloin was a little overcooked (I requested rare steak) and the sauces were slightly floury, as if the roux wasn't cooked for long enough. The sides were well portioned and did their job. I enjoyed the change of pace where instead of a bread basket we were given complimentary olives and sweet potato crisps. Desserts were beautifully plated and the créme brûlée was satisfying without being overly sweet. I can definitely say that the service exceeded my expectations, even though they fell a little short, for the food. Will definitely return because I really enjoyed the unhurried and...
Read moreWhat is going on? Plastic STICKY table cloths? That the menus stick to and then stain brown? What happened to the crisp white cotton tablecloths? What was a fine dining experience has become a Wimpy!!! No more chocolate liqueurs at the end of the meal as well. Having dined there on many occasions you saw the last of me yesterday!
You replied to my above review and requested my contact details and told me to follow a link. The link does NOT work, i suggest you should fix that.....
So I revert to the review page, so unfortunately this stays online.
Have all Hussars moved to plastic table cloths? I am meeting a friend at Montecasino today and will check the Hussars there.
Most people in SA drink white wine with ice. A plastic table cloth causes puddles of water under the glass which runs down/across the tablecloth onto your clothes. We were all constantly requesting serviettes from our waitress to wipe the tablecoth down.
But simply put, Hussars prides itself, or so I thought, on an upmarket product, suggesting fine dining. Cotton tablecloths around the world are synonymous with fine dining. You should know that. As the flagship and success story of the Spur Group, it has done very well.
So a clear step down. Unless Hussars Blueberry themselves are saving on laundry costs at the expense of your reputation and the loss of their customers?
If you can respond with a link that works i shall provide my contact details, as you...
