Maison du Mezze — Local services in Zurich

If money is no issue, then this is the place for you. Expensive even for Zurich standards, be fully prepared to spend a lot at this menu-free, service-lite, takeaway-first restaurant. We made a reservation and were seated outside on rickety furniture. Impeccably wobbly and uneven, undersized and awkwardly situated. I didn’t realize hummus could be so expensive. Simple, but tasty Lebanese food was painstakingly spooned out into very small bowls that apparently cost CHF14 per bowl. I’m not even sure it is home/restaurant made or if it came from a hummus package from the local Co-op. Don’t make the mistake of ordering beer. This presented the restaurant staff a new challenge - they had to rush out to the local grocery store to get warm mediocre beer. It took well over one hour and a half for the diffident staff (one person) to acknowledge that we even existed. No menus. No prices. I suspect they are so used to Swiss bankers and traders that they don’t care what they charge. When you do finally get the bill they make it seem like it’s your fault that you didn’t know how much it was going to cost and they are unapologetic in their billing. 3 beers, and a mezzo plate for 5 people - CHF 412. I’ve been to restaurants all over the world, including Michelin starred, and I’m happy to pay for decent food, Maison du Mezze is however a joke. Chaotic and diffident service that makes a cafe in Marseilles appear customer friendly. I don’t even think they make the food there, but buy it locally. Hummus came from plastic containers. Bread was stale. Chicken was raw and undercooked. Dolmas were tired and flavorless. They appeared more focused on their take-away orders than the people at the restaurant. There are a lot of great restaurants in Zurich, this is not one of them. Huge room for improvement. Diners tip- Go to Co-Op or Migros and stock-up on Mediterranean treats and go down to the gorgeous waterfront...

We just had dinner here tonight. The food was excellent. The chicken was perfectly done, not dried out like other Mezze places, lamb and all the mezze were packed with flavours. Loved the appetizers, true Lebanese taste and completely delicious. I would suggest they warm up a bit more the hot ones. They cater and will order from them for sure. The setting and location is beautiful, loved the tables facing out. Would suggest a bit more comfortable benches, maybe...
