Mother Hubbard’s Famous Fish & Chips Burton On Trent — Local services in East Staffordshire

The food is great - no issues there. But having been twice, now, the speed of service is dire.

Went in last night, and ordered through the electronic menu as the first time I went I dealt with an assistant who basically over-charged me for something that was cheaper as a meal deal - also my fault for not checking the menu enough. This time I got the meal deal, and had a 15 minute wait as they served family first who clearly were more important to them than a single full-paying customer, even though my order was in before theirs was completed (why does the order seem to only go to the counter and not duplicated to the prep team, relying on them to bother checking for it when you're standing there waiting already). You'd think they'd get the single fish & chips meal out of the way, or at least use both counter staff when there's more one waiting.

The wait I'd has WAS noted by the assistant - but to her colleague "the guy's been waiting a while" - with no apology to me for the wait. The colleague had been filling the drinks up, with no stock rotation so all the cold ones were at the back. First rule of selling being missed.

All in all, it IS expensive BUT so are most places now. You have to accept that. Maybe these are teething troubles for a relatively new business, but training or experienced staff should really prevent these sorts of thing.

Finally, one of the members of family walked into the kitchen from the front, no hygiene being followed despite at one point going to get his own box (and touching one he didn't take) which really isn't good. The lad filling the drinks didn't wash his hands either after doing that and returning to the counter. Again, basic stuff that should be second nature in food service at any stage.

Anyways we weren't disappointed, Very clean place with attention to details decorations.

The young girl behind the counter greeted us with a Hugh smile on her face Just the start we needed super friendly & then the owner of the business come to the table introduced himself, We talked about food and alot more, Could have gone forever, Exellent manners & Business pro active ideas could hold his own a professional attitude and a brilliant conversationist.

The Seating to this place is layed out promptly an neatly with privacy in mind Cleaness was Visible/Spotless. Wash rooms were also clean and fragrances was blossoming with smell in the air apparent.

These little things make a Big difference. Now moving on to the main bit.

The food was cooked freshly, Large portions, Fish & chips was 👌 Could feed two ppl.

Awesome is an understatement, Although I never tried they're other stuff thought I give it a try today, Even they're Burgers were special, Mother hubbards is renowned for there fish & chips, But too me the Burgers were the suprise package, All I'm going to say is

& just want to add this comment to the people of Burton, Derbyshire,Or surrounding areas, Do try this place, Don't take my word for it, I took some food for my friend he really loved it.

So my final verdict is 10/10 Top marks. The only down side is the council doesn't give them planning permission for them to change anything outside, The building is easy to missable, I hope they do give them the necessity to go ahead? To make changes, They deserve it.

I've been to other Mother Hubbard's branches and have found that the food is very nice...so we expected the same from this Mother Hubbard's in Burton. When we walked through the door, we immediately saw that the place was as dead as a dodo...we placed our order and then proceeded to take a seat at the table. We found that the place was very cold and realised that they didn't have the heating on. What we found odd was that when we sat down, the lady that had taken our order, came over and inquired if we were gonna dine in. It was odd because she didn't ask us when we placed the order but when she saw us sitting down, she asked if we were dining in and we told her that we were. Then a little while later, she asked us again whether we were gonna eat in or take our order away. Again, my husband replied that we were gonna eat in. Shortly after, our order came out. Immediately, we noticed that the fish was not the usual long, thick fillet that we normally get from the other Mother Hubbard's we have eaten at. Instead it was a thin, flat and a kind of a triangular shaped piece of fish. It didn't even have the unique distinctive taste of haddock. It just tasted of nothing really, and not what you'd expect for the price that they charge. Shortly after we ate there, we felt sick and suffered an upset stomach. So we definitely won't be returning there again. We don't know what they served us but it most definitely didn't look or taste like haddock...whatever it was, it wasn't cooked properly and...
