Fished here up until a couple of years ago. I stopped going, because of the lack of investment in to there 'specimen' pool, Holbar.
It used to fish well, with carp up to 15lb, barbel up 7lb but there was a fish that lost most, if not all of the barbel (I was there when a lot of the were floating on the surface so I witnessed it first hand)
The bridge over to the island was ready for collapsing into the water, it started to get gangs of lads spoiling the atmosphere. You would see a bailiff once all day to check if you'd paid.
All this, whilst all of the match lakes were getting money thrown at them to keep the match fishing lads happy was enough to stop me and several others moving to new fisheries.
It's a shame, because the venue overall is a really nice place, but you can go to there waters, with bigger and better fish that is run better by bailiffs.
Hi, Has I can't respond directly to your response to my review, I've edited my review.
My review and opinion of your fishery is fair, and one shared by plenty of others that used to fish there.
I fished on Holbar for years, and the bridge was in a terrible state from the first day I started fishing there.
It's taken you how many years to net the water? it was over run with silvers when I stopped fishing there, which was stunting the growth of the carp in there.
And in your response to my original comment, you never addressed the lack of seeing bailiffs all day? which meant anti-social behaviour started to become a problem with people smoking cannabis, and becoming louder as the day went on which I did email yourselves about, but didn't get a response.
I'll stand by my original review, because it shouldn't take a fishery years to fix a bridge, net a water etc.. when people are paying good money to fish there, when every week all of your social media posts are all about looking after your match waters. It's clear to see your 99% of your focus is looking after your match anglers, because of the revenue it generates.
19/12/24 Just to update this review purely because of the criticism I received from tbe owner for posting an honest review about holbar. Again.. why as it took a match due to be held on holbar for you to do extensive work on the pegs on holbar to ready it for your match anglers? As per my original review.. you only look after the match anglers on there! You seem happy to shout it from the roof tops you're doing the work. What was wrong with doing it for the carp anglers previous...
Read moreFished here for the first time recently and will not be returning.
First off, it was not very clear what the procedure was upon arrival. Did we need to "Check in" ? Can we pull straight upto the lake (Holbar) and unpack? I couldn't find anything on the website prior to arrival, and upon arrival it was even more confusing. Ended up parking up and going into the shop to ask, and was told we can pull straight up to the lake. Drove around to head towards Holbar, and no joke there was 100 people just stood in the road blocking it all the way down, appeared to be match anglers. No care in the world, no respect or awareness of others.
First off, Holbar has WAY too many pegs. The guy next to us continuously casted into our swim, we had a 10foot "Corridor" to fish in, and was extremely restricted by the pegs either side that were a few feet away. It wasn't really the anglers fault, the venue and pegs are designed this way for maximum ££ , at the detrimental of the fisherman. At the bare minimum, it could do with 50% less pegs , but obviously they wouldn't do this, £££.
Holbar seems suitable for pole fishing due the restricted swims, but if you're a carp angler I would avoid. They have put a small number of large fish, but 95% of the stock seems to be single digits. If you caught anything over 10lb and the fish bolted and took line, you're guaranteed to cross the guy next to you.
This lake seems to have been setup by a businessman rather than a fisherman. Disappointed to say the least.
Unless you're pole / match fishing, then i'd look at other venues in the area. Plenty of well run...
Read moreWent to this fishery yesterday lovely place a tad expensive on day ticket on sight facilities were okay but pricey in the cafe but expected for the area as for the fishing(willow) that was a little hit or miss fed well in the mornings ,slow in afternoon picked up again in the evening , the cause of concern is some of the fish that were caught looked as tho they had a disease mouth a lot" im no expert in this matter" but the odd carp had pockets of blood around the mouth and some of the lips looked a bit mutated , biggest concern was seen a couple of young lads carp fishing near mine and a friends peg from 2pm till close firing in a lot of bait and casting with the ledger touching the tips of the rod even saw one lying on his carp bed and casting out now they were told a couple of times not to cast in other people's swim but it fell on deaf ears so I think a couple of visits from the lake assistants should do a patrol 3 times a day especially in the holidays when the schools are off and give a bit of guidance. This post was not from a" Grumpy" but from a person who as enjoyed fishing for 40 odd years and been lucky to go to other fisheries up and down the country. Sorry for been...
