For most of the week, this beautiful cobbled market square is a short-stay car park (maximum stay an hour). But I came here on a Thursday, when the busy and vibrant outdoor market was taking place. A wide range of stalls including fresh fruit and veg, fish, lovely cakes and pastries, local cheeses, men's and women's clothing, footwear, bags, flowers and plants, household linens and much more. There was also a barista and stalls selling freshly prepared street food. The traders were good-humoured and friendly, and there were good bargains to be found. I bought a delicious roll filled with roast pork, stuffing and apple sauce at the Yorkshire Roast Co van, and sat at the base of the obelisk to eat it and watch the world go by. An inexpensive and very pleasant lunch! There are shops and eateries all around the square, and free public toilets just around the corner from the Wakeman's House Café.
