Came up to this neck of the woods on a short weekend break with the Missus. She found this place online and was intrigued the both the positive reviews and interesting menu. Having eaten at numerous pubs previously we both felt that a bistro would make a nice change.
We arrived around 10 minutes before our booking and were shown to our window side seat. The staff offered to take our coats which was a nice touch and something we are not used to coming from the south of the country.
We pondered the menu which we both found varied and interesting. Seeing some of the flavour parings really peaked my interest. As soon as I saw pigeon I knew I had to have it. For starters I had pigeon with beetroot crisps, potato shreds and nettle creme fresh.
This was honestly one of the most delicious and delightful things I've ever eaten. The pigeon was cooked perfectly and the flavours really wowed me. My partner chose the carrot and coriander soup which severed boiling hot from a small cauldron. She stated it was tasty and fulfilling.
For mains I had the lamb rump with minty bubble and squeak, red wine and gooseberry sauce and heirloom carrots. Again this was just delightful. The bubble was seared perfectly on both sides and had a nice minty undertone. The lamb was perfectly pink and juicy with a lovely sear to the fat. The carrots were cooked to perfection and were glazed or dressed with some splendid sauce. The whole (presumably stewed) gooseberries were a lovely punch of acidity.
My girlfriend had the lemon and herb fish cake with curry sauce. The sauce was lovely and the fish cake was perfectly cooked. The sauce had a subtle sweetness and was not overpowering.
We had no room for pudding and we left feeling satisfied and full. I was described as being speechless after I left and on reflection I was. This meal blew me away with its flavour, complexity and finally value for money. Upon receiving the bill we were both shocked to find out how reasonably priced the food was. Two of us had two courses of heaven a glass of wine and a soft drink for under 80 pounds. This place was nothing other than perfect and is a must for any local or visiting person.
My compliments to all the chefs and...
Read moreIn general, had a lovely evening. Service was absolutely outstanding and very attentive. The atmosphere was very warm and cozy, lovely background music for ambience and my wife and I loved the natural light from the skylight.
Food was a bit of a mixed bag. Now it is worth noting that we went of a Sunday evening and so we're ordering from the Sunday specific menu, this review may be updated in future as we intend to revisit and try the main menu.
Starters were truly lovely, with beautiful presentation, and set us up really well and we were looking forward to the mains.
My wife and I both ordered the roast pork. This is where things are a bit less than expected. The food wasn't bad exactly, just a bit bland and lackluster, especially the veg, which I would easily say, I could've done better myself at home (which is not what you want to be saying of a restaurant meal). The veg accompanying the roast was just very basic, very little flavour and no real creativity, like what was shown with the starters. The meat was cooked well and the Yorkshire's were amazing it must be said.
Desserts were again pretty pleasant. My wife ordered the cheeseboard and enjoyed it for the most part, one cheese she found a bit too salty and I agreed, but that is perhaps just personal preference so I won't hold it against the restaurant. I myself had the raspberry Panna cotta and I have no complaints. It was a beautiful dish with lovely combinations of flavour and well presented.
Overall we did really enjoy our night and again I can emphasise enough how good the service was, it's been quite a long time since I've had service like that and it is a true credit to the staff of this restaurant, so if they see this, all I can say is well done and thank you. Like I said earlier, we will be going back again to try the weekday menu and see if our experience fairs any better...
Read moreMy partner and I have lived in Ripon for a year now and have only ever walked by Storehouse whilst heading to town - neither of us realised just how fantastic this place was, though we had had recommendations from friends. Low & behold we decided to try it out as it was my birthday and therefore entered Storehouse one sunny warm evening last week only to discover a hidden gem. It was quite early in the evening so we had the place to ourselves. We opted for window seat and that is where the amazement began.. the waiter came to us right away and he was utterly attentive, kind and chatty. Then we met the head manager - an older guy dressed in a dapper white shirt and smart trousers. He was the friendliest manager I've ever encountered. They were all so kind and engaging and informative. We began with a delicious fruity housewine and starters and soon moved onto our delicious main, followed by a cheeky pudding (photos attached). Everything about the experience was mind-blowing and we tipped generously. My partner and I left with huge smiles on our faces (not to mention full bellies). We will definitely return here many times again...
