I was with mr spirov today and things did not happen as the owner describes. Our name was taken and written on the list, and we were told we could have the bike as soon as it returned. We saw it return shortly afterwards and went back to the shop. We asked for the bike but were told that it had just been handed out to the wrong person whose name had been written below ours on the waiting list - the assistant actually said 'i thought i called you'. He then even sent a couple of his colleagues out to try to get it back off the renters and another member of staff, who seemed to be in charge, then reprimanded the assistant saying 'you need to better highlight who comes first'. He was quite embarrassed and said we could have it once it was returned ( the bike just left so it would have returned in an hour, maybe, or at the end of the day, who knows? not 30 minutes!! ) . At that point, aware of the way they were handling businees and not wanting to upset the children any longer we had to refuse. I must say the owner was not present at the scene so their reply was the voice of the very unprofessional staff. Myself and the family took out a quadricycle for the day to go around the island. Staff on hand were very friendly and helpful, they had us out on the road in no time. The kids got to meet Pablo the dog, who was laidback and chilled on the chair outside.

The island itself is beautiful, the various stopping points give you plenty opportunity to take photos and to take in the views. The weather was wet and windy at times, but this didn’t put us off and probably added to the experience if anything. We also stopped at Fintry bay for an ice cream which was superb.

When we returned the gent who served us was interested to hear how we got on and chatted away to us which was nice.

We decided on Mapes to hire the bike from as when we popped into their toy store next door, the young lad who was serving was very friendly and he engaged with the kids, showing them some of the prank/joke toys.

Cycling round Cumbrae Island was fantastic however the day was slightly ruined by the shocking customer service at Mapes Cycle Hire. My wife's trousers were ripped and ruined by the bike we hired as it didn't have a chain guard fitted. When we complianed we were told that we should have read the disclaimer that they have on the wall. Firstly, if you intend to use a disclaimer to solve complaints you need to point the disclaimer out to customers at the point of hiring the bikes. Secondly don't tell customers that you can't fit new chain guards or that you normally supply trousers clips! We weren't offered any trouser clips nor were we advised that there was a disclaimer that we could/should have read.

Our advice would be to walk a bit further down the road and use one of the other bike hire providers on the island. If you do hire from here make sure you check the bikes thoroughly as you won't have any luck complaining after you've handed...
