I went to Clithroe and the first place we spotted was this outdoor market. I always like a good outdoor market and it's a shame that so many are shutting down or shrinking. Unfortunately this market is also shrinking and some of the stalls were not occupied. However some of what was there was well worth a visit.

There was a Horsebox serving some absolutely fantastic bacon baps. The bacon was top quality and the barm it came on was also very good, unlike some you can buy!

There was also a great stall serving up millionaires shortcake and the like and so of course we had to sample that. Very nice.

A few of the shops were in buildings to the left. I thought the layout made them a little out of the way and only by walking round would you know what they were selling. I'm sure they'd get more business if they were more obvious. The market town planners probably didn't know what they were doing.

There was an antiques stall which took up about three tables. A lot of it was just old tat probably from house clearances but at least it occupied part of the market, better than nothing.

At the top was a decent looking women's clothes shop and to the left an Asian food outlet which looked good although I didn't buy anything.

Worth a visit although overall...

Clitheroe market use to be a great market but the council like everything else in Clitheroe they are letting go downhill because they don't advertise the stalls enough and also our castle grounds are going downhill that's why nobody wants to come to Clitheroe like they use to and brugley park just over growing with weeds its a mess I can remember when our market and all the castle grounds and brugley use to be heaving with people having picnics and playing bowls but not anymore I mean look at all that stupid money spent on that roundabout by the gramer school that could of been money spent on the castle and brugley come on Clitheroe council where's your pride gone in our town and then you let people like thornbers mill take over with a bar and shops and a swimming pool and put our local shops out of business all because big bucks talk how about concentrating on our town and castle and gardens for once and our local traders eh that's it rant over if anyone...

It was a fantastic visit. Not many stall due to the weather. Plenty of parking and a very fair price. Loved the horse box cafe. Had to teas and my wife had a fruit scone but l read the board and picked up on the cornbeef and onion toasties. The staff brought it to our table. Giveth is horsebox cafe a try. So glad l did. There is a fantastic lady selling her knitted items. I have her card and will be getting her to make me a jumper for winter. Just out side to left is a very large charity shop. It's big and very well set out and the prices are very low. Bought my self a falcon pipe and sitting here now smoking it. The market is on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Will be back as often as l can. Don't miss the coffee firm which has a big machine in side the door. What a...

It was a Thursday so I can't comment on other days at the market. I was in town for other business but my route took me through the marketplace. There is a mixture of permanent brick stores and more traditional outdoor market stalls. Of the latter all were standing empty and of the permanent I'd say only about half were open. Amongst those that were open were a butcher's, a cheese shop, a wool shop, fishmongers, green grocer, Asian Street food store and a clothes store. All the produce I saw looked good. It's just a pity that a marketplace in such a gorgeous setting - In the shadow of castle - should be so under used.

What can we say, we have been in Clitheroe for the last 9 months and without the local market well, from Mr Hacking and his finest meat, Mr Bolton and his finest chicken Kiev's, and Tom fabulous cooked meats and of course Oliver and his fantastic fish, of course the fresh vegetables and always a warm reception, we have had a great season and can't wait to be back next February of course recommending all our guests at the camping and caravanning site at Eddisford bridge to visit on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday as well as the town itself with its great pubs, cafes and shops. A great place to work and live.
