Watford Market — Local services in Watford

I've been coming to Watford market since the late 1970s. It used to be indoors with dozens of stalls selling food, household items, clothes, all sorts. Over the years it shrunk a bit, but was always nice to visit. Then the building was demolished to be redeveloped and the market moved outdoors. It's still going and is good if there's a stall selling the items you need. There's a lovely butcher, a couple of fruit & veg stalls and a selection of excellent food outlets. Disgraceful that the Council have moved the market to an out of the way place that is much smaller and freezing in winter. I used to go to the market in Charter Place but not to the new location (or Watford come to that). Surely "Charter" refers to a right to hold a market in centre of town. The Council should find a place for the market within the new development, but I know that is a forlorn hope. Local democracy doesn't work any more. I don't think anyone wanted a big extension to the Harlequin (and whose bright idea was it to change the name to the meaningless INTU?) - it's just big money that has any...

I recently visited the Watford Market and had a mixed experience. Given that it was a weekday, many shops were closed, which was quite disappointing. Among the open stores, the general hygiene was not very appealing, with some areas appearing rather unkempt. The sitting area, in particular, had an unpleasant sticky feeling, likely due to old grease. Additionally, I found the overall food prices to be on the higher side.
