REI Shopping Tips: Consider buying high-quality, long-lasting items you can maintain and potentially resell. Choose eco-friendly products that decompose easily if accidentally left behind.

Read moreBought a City 1.0 Step through here in early March. Asked the sales person if I should just wait for the member sale in May and he said that he had never seen bikes included in the member's sale event. Same bike $100 less during the sales event, but REI will only go back 14 days for price adjustments. Bitter pill, but the service buying the bike was great and when I have come in it is apparent the bike folks know their stuff. I have been riding the same Specialized bike since the early 2000s - I have never performed any bike maintenance, and my bike rides fine. I have never been a bike nut, but I have always had and ridden bikes - never had a derailleur fail in 44 years. Now we have had this City bike for about 3 months and the derailleur totally exploded. The bike techs insist it was due to "trauma" inflicted on our part. We have a shed that the bikes are stored in and it is a daily commuter bike, so it is out in the elements parked at a middle school, so this is possible, though I could not find any indications that "trauma" had occurred. The bike was $650 and with accessories and extras out the door we paid just under $800. They did offer to take a return on the bike, but insisted if we wanted it repaired that it would be $45 for a derailleur, $35 for a derailleur hanger and $20 for labor or $100. I asked nicely if they could just perform the repair on the house as JUST last week the same bike was exactly $100 less. It would be a wash - we could all walk away okay. They thought I...

It hurts to change a good 5 stars to a 1 star.
I've been taking my mountain for service here, but this year, their service is horrible.
I took the bike for a tune-up, and they left the gears worse than before. I was ok, maybe something overlooked.
Then I took the bike for a fork and shock service due to an out of country bike travel, the bike was promised within a week and after a week of delivery date I didn't hear from them. I called, and they didn't know where the bike parts were. I was livid since it is only a couple of days out of the trip, and they didn't know what the status of the bike was.
After a couple of hours, they called me back to say that they didn't do anything and they would be putting my bike together. 24 hours passed, and still nothing. Needed to call again, and they promised it to be delivered in a couple of hours.
In addition, I recommended the shop to a friend, he took the bike for regular maintenance and they told them the chain was good for 500 more miles, two 12 miles rides and the bike is shifting poor. He takes the bike in, and now they said chain and cassette need replacement. Like, they just checked it and said it was all fine.
If you're serious about your bike, don't take it here at all....
