It was my son’s 9th birthday. His gift was to build his first custom skateboard. It was a Sunday and I was stoked to find that Ampt was open. It was our first time in this store… and as a former skater, when I walked in it was very nostalgic for me. Robbie greeted us with a huge smile. Told Robbie my son was building his first skateboard. Robbie was pumped. Robbie took his time and explained every detail of the board from deck to bearing to how the grip tape was installed. Robbie walked him through every step on how to build the board and make adjustments. He was very patient with my son and answered every question. It was a rad experience. Funny story. I walked in on a whim knowing exactly nothing and wanting to start learning. The staff at the store was excellent. He really got me hooked up with beginner stuff and even recommended places I could go to learn! He was knowledgeable and nice to talk to. He stayed a bit late to help me get set up and put it all together. He recommended decently priced items and was honest with me about what I needed and how things worked. My 14yr old wanted to switch from a long board to a short board for skate parks. The owner was amazing and talked to her and walked her through different options for wheels, bearings, and trucks. There was no pressure to buy the most expensive items and you could tell the owner was happy to help someone new to skate boarding. We went back a few times while we were in Cali, and every time, whoever was working was amazing with knowledge and had a sincere desire to help new skaters....
