Went today with my kiddos and omg the nostalgia...take me back! What a gem of a place! Arcade games were great (at least for my kids they were), snack bar had a good selection (even though we only ordered slushees and popcorn) and the DJ was pumping out tunes that were for the young and old’er and made this mom not want to leave the skating rink! Restrooms were clean, facility was clean, skates were great, staff was super friendly, hand sanitizer everywhere for patrons to use, and ample seating all around. The only thing that I can suggest is they have another person on hand to help run the skate rental/snack bar/sock race/speed race. The poor guy that was in charge of it all lost a TON of snack bar sales because he was never able to be at the snack bar for long. At 4:30 when it was time to go, everyone was thirsty and a huge line formed several times for food and drinks but the poor guy was out on the rink running the sock/speed races. Someone else should’ve been behind that snack bar to capture sales, make the customers even more happy before they leave and help keep this gem of a place open for ma y more years to come. I still give it 5 stars because perhaps they were supposed to have another person work the snack bar today and couldn’t so they were doing the best they could. I always give the benefit of the doubt and the guy that ran all three things did it with a smile and nothing but terrific customer service skills. We will definitely be back soon! Worth...
Read moreMy first experience at ashland skateland was great! The guy running things was really nice and the environment was great to be in! 2 weeks later suddenly there are rules that were not enforced on my first visit. No outside food or beverages (not even water) and no bags. Wish these rules were listed on the website so I could've come better prepared. As someone with bad rheumatoid arthritis in my hands, it's very painful for me to carry my skates without my bag since I can just put the weight on my shoulders instead of needing to use my hands. Lots of people had bags in the building bigger than mine. I totally understand not wanting outside food and beverages inside, just wish that was on the website. Was thinking about becoming a regular here but not anymore. Lots of safety hazards (adults and children crowding entrances/exits, saw an adult man skating way too fast and running into a small child, several things in need of repair but being duct taped, etc.) and they don't seem to treat everyone the same. Please have people with disabilities in mind the next time you make rules that could cause us pain in a time that we are supposed to be having fun and not have to think about...
Read moreWent on New Year's Day, 1-4 pm with 3 families (5 adults, 7 kids from 11 to 3 years old).
Everyone had skate rentals, a mix of inline and quads. You can switch from one to the other if you don't like the one you get, both are the same price. The youngest got Fisher Price skates that went over the shoes (kids sizes 6-12). Skates were largely good, though mine had one spot that was pressing on my ankle after a couple of hours. If you fall and need to ice a wrist or anything, the concession stand will give you a baggie of ice.
Skating rink was good, there was a good mix of music, modern and 80s. It was pretty warm in the rink, kids were sweating quite a bit. Mentioned it to the concession stand worker, she said it'd been like that since New Year's Eve.
There are water fountains by the restrooms, or you can pay 25¢ for a cup of ice water (free refill on the ice water, though). Restrooms were as I'd expect for a skating rink.
Kids had a blast and now want their own skates. Lots of fun and a throwback to days gone by. We look forward to going again, just hope the temperature is...
