I had my first appointment at the salon to see Amy for a haircut. I waited fifteen minutes past my appointment time to be seen, which isn’t an extensive amount of time, but it made me realize it was the first time I’ve ever had to wait for a hairstylist with an appointment. The guy at the front was very sweet and asked if he could get me anything during my wait. Once I got seated with Amy, we went over my hair goals and I showed her pictures of my last hair cut in New Orleans which I loved so much. Amy told me she didn’t like it. I appreciate when a stylist gives their professional input, but what she didn’t like about the look was that it wasn’t polished. My hair is very, very fine with sort of wavy, wiry texture. I like to get it cut with respect to that. I rarely style my hair in a sleek way.

I wanted curtain bangs with a lot of face framing and layering throughout. I like long hair but I told her that I was okay with going shorter if it worked best for the layering I wanted. Amy told me she preferred to keep it long. She kept referring to what I wanted as messy. When she got to cutting my hair, this is the first time I’ve ever had my hair cut dry. It wasn’t washed or wetted in the salon. I’ve have my hair trimmed wet and then trimmed more once blow-dried, but this sort of dry cut doesn’t work with hair texture like mine. Needless to say, she barely cut anything off and it looks the same as when I walked in. My ends aren’t even what little she did trim around my face isn’t balanced. I’m moving out of Austin, and it pains me that I can't take Amy Ha with me. I have very typical Korean hair. When I was younger, it was pin straight and thick. Now it tends to wave a bit, has thinned significantly, and is actually coarse and slightly frizzy. Amy is a true pro with color, and her haircuts are meticulous. At one point, she was sweeping my hair into a ponytail to ensure it looked cute styled this way. I often wear my hair up.

Every time I have an appointment with Amy, I immediately receive compliments on my hair. But to me, the true test is how a haircut grows out; Amy’s cuts always grow out looking terrific. It is beyond any salon experience I have had, and I have had a lot. I just moved to Austin and one of the most important things was finding a great stylist. The salon is amazing from start to finish. When you walk in you feel like you are being taken care of. Rachel was at the front desk when we arrived and she is a breath of fresh air. So professional, efficient, kind, warm, and gives a great shampoo. The vibe and atmosphere of the salon are just cool. Lauren did my hair and she is outstanding.
