When my wife, Carol, announced she wanted a new kitchen; I knew the dark 80’s cabinets would soon be gone. What I didn’t know was that Carol wanted a whole new design. We had been to Berkeley Woodworking and we were very impressed with the quality of materials and designs. But knowing what features she wanted prompted Carol to search numerous cabinet companies to make sure she had investigated all the possible options. After all her researching was complete, Carol said she thought we needed to go back to Berkeley Woodworking. Richard Webb, the owner, sat down with us to discuss what Carol wanted in her new kitchen. The biggest problem we faced was a footprint that could not be altered. Carol wanted more counter space, a decorative hood over the cooktop and a pantry for more storage. So we had to look at the adjacent breakfast area for relief. Richard looked at a desk with some adjacent cabinets and asked we wanted to keep them. Carol had never been a fan of how that space was used and said she would definitely give it up. Richard drew up a plan where we had 6 4 foot cabinets on top of smaller cabinets (for cookbooks) and drawers for papers, pens, tape, etc. The unit spread from the breakfast area around a corner to an entryway. He even built a transitional corner cabinet to keep brooms and mops. We would now have the ample pantry and storage space that Carol had always wanted. Then looking at an old corner hutch, Richard said he could make a colonial built-in hutch to match the style of the first floor architecture. Carol knew the color she wanted for her cabinets and we found the off white accented combination right away with Richard’s help. Carol’s desire for a more efficient island with architectural details lead Richard to design an island that we both thought would be perfect. Richard suggested the island and hutch be made in a darker wood to compliment the white cabinets of the kitchen and pantry. The construction started with the total gutting of our old footprint. Richard and his crew reworked the electrical service to increase outlets and lighting. They removed the boxy double ovens and we put in a stove with double ovens under the cooktop. That added more usable counter space and was topped off with an under the counter microwave that eliminated clutter. Richard coordinated the appliance purchases, the new countertop and sinks with fixtures, the construction of the stone hood, refinishing the wood floors and all the detail finish work. We were done in a little over two months. Everyone who came for the holidays was in awe of the changes to the whole kitchen and breakfast area. The knowledge, the design and craftsmanship in the work from the Berkeley crew were top notch. This was not our first remodeling project, but it is the most spectacular outcome we have ever...
