I joined the Cheshire Club which pre-dated the YMCA Black Mountain. My main reason for a membership was to swim laps. During the time of the Cheshire Club which ended a year ago, it was a pleasure to swim laps here. I was concerned when the Y took it over, that it would become too crowded and that the lap swimming would be badly impacted. Just one day ago I was happily swimming a lap, when suddenly five very young teenagers all plunged into the lap lane next to me. It turns out they were part of a swim team somewhere in the area that has a membership to the pool. The five young kids jumped into the pool from the shallow end and began to swim laps very fast and one after the other making the rest of the pool very splashy and.filled with rough waves that made regular lap swimming impossible. I made a complaint. The next day the Aquatics director called me, said she was sorry I had such a difficult time but the kids were equal members (apparently I was less equal) and why didn’t I swim in the morning since the afternoon is always crowded and swim team members are more likely to be there. This was not a viable solution for me. In the year that the Y took over the Cheshire, the parking lot is very full and it’s often hard to find a parking spot. The locker room which is small to begin with is now so jammed it’s hard to find an empty locker and hard to negotiate due to overcrowding. The staff is young and thus attending to the needs of older adults has plunged almost to zero over the needs of kids and young people. I believe the Y should be attentive to the needs of all their members and that seniors should not get second class...

just now New This place is full of racist and sexist people. I had to cancel my membership due to being harassed by a man here plus the director Scott. A man came near me and refused to leave me alone. I asked him repeatedly and then he went and go the director Scott who came out yelling at me and telling me to get off the equipment when someone ask. I was not even on the equipment for 5 whole minutes. The man was staring me down as soon as I sat down on the equipment and being very strange. Only women were willing to stand up for me and a lady told me he did the same thing to her and she was reporting it. I will say three women came to my defense, all the men just stood around sadly.
I was also yelled at by another man the one time I entered the pool after asking the lifeguard if I had permission and what the rules were. The man in the pool berated me for entering his lane. Once again a lady said she saw everything and felt bad for my experience.
I don’t feel safe coming here. Scott the director is racist and aggressive and it’s really sad the YMCA has gained such a reputation of being sexist and racist and asking black women to get up and give their seats. After and during the time that I was being harassed Scott screamed at me that I was not being harassed but that I was exaggerating. Scott is a very dangerous person and I would not trust him to...
Read moreWhat originally was worthy of five star's is now lowered to two, mainly because I did enjoy coming here for awhile which is why I'm being generous with one more star. The primary reason for this review is because it is with deep regret that I can no longer be a member and a fan of this facility due to the changes taking place here and going into effect. This past weekend was my last time here, and both the last time and the visit before that it felt VERY different from before the full transition started to take shape, mostly all different staff and member's, it was as if everyone had already left to go elsewhere, very sad it turned out this way, we have lost our local fitness center. I had been a member since almost the start of this year and a part of me now regrets it, but at the same time I really did enjoy coming here and won't forget it. With that said I now end my review with the words, thanks for the memories, and farewell to...
