I consider myself more tech-savvy than the average person. Iâve built four gaming PCs in the past few years and am the go-to tech support for friends and family. So when I offered to upgrade my dadâs five-year-old laptop with a new SSD and more RAM, I wasnât worried, despite the fact that his entire small business runs on that machine, and he never backs anything up (a mistake Iâll never overlook again).
But after installing the new RAM and resetting the CMOS, the laptop wouldnât boot. Resetting BIOS settings only made things worse, completely bricking the laptop. Just a black screen. No signs of life. I panicked. I spent hours troubleshooting, digging through YouTube and Reddit with no luck.
I first called Computer Repair Plus, but they were on another call, so I tried another local shop, Brazos, who told me it would take seven days just to look at the laptop. That timeline wasn't going to work.
So I called Computer Repair Plus again. This time, Marc answered. I was stumbling over my words from stress, but he calmly reassured me and told me to bring it in right away. I instantly felt relief, someone listened to the situation I was in and treated me like a human and not a ticket number. I stopped everything and drove an hour to their shop in Bryan.
Marc immediately started working on the laptop while I stayed and observed. For several hours that first day, he diagnosed the issue and tried different BIOS recovery methods. When none worked, he explained his next step: removing the BIOS chip and flashing a freshly compiled BIOS externally using a programmer (I think I got that correct).
While programs were running, Marc was juggling other repairs and helping walk-in customers. I was genuinely impressed with his multitasking and dedication. He even stayed at the shop a couple hours after closing to take care of customers that needed their devices for that night for school and work.
The next morning, I got a text from Marc letting me know he successfully repaired the BIOS and needed the hard drive I had taken home. When I brought it in, he could've just handed me the laptop back and sent me on my way, but instead, he offered to install the new SSD and RAM for me.
Good thing too, the RAM I had purchased wasnât compatible with the original BIOS version (F.08), but worked fine with the updated one (F.62). Throughout the day he was able to upgrade the BIOS, install the new RAM, as well as perform a sector-by-sector clone from a partially corrupted HDD to the new SSD, salvaging all of my dadâs business data. As a bonus, he even repaired a USB port that had been broken for years. He truly goes above and beyond, because he cares.
Spending two days at the shop gave me a real appreciation for the team. Marc, Yolanda, and Drew are all kind, honest, and go the extra mile for every customer. I even saw situations where most shops would take advantage of someoneâs lack of tech knowledge where Marc, on the other hand, took the time to educate them and find affordable solutions.
In todayâs world, where many places try to upsell you on unnecessary parts and labor (like turning a $60 oil change into a $600 mechanic bill), itâs rare to find a business like Computer Repair Plus - honest, skilled, and customer first. They remind me of a classic Mom and Pop shop you can trust time and time again.
From now on, Iâll be taking all of my electronic repairs, big or small, to Computer Repair Plus. Their turnaround is fast, their work is top-tier, and their prices are fair. Other shops might take weeks and upsell you on things you donât need. Marc and his team will treat you right.
Thank you, Marc, Yolanda, and Drew. Youâve earned a loyal customer and a new friend. Iâll see...
Read moreComputer Repair Plus has gone above and beyond to help me after I tried to give my Lenovo ThinkPad a bath...took it to One Who Shall Not Be Named, so, let's call them Worst Sell, where the Gee Squat team told me my keyboard was toast and I would need to rebuild and replace the keyboard parts on my computer, which would cost me almost as much as a new computer because the parts were now obsolete! Moving past all the details of the Sales Rep selling me a horrible computer and talking me into adding the Nil care plan covering the Gee Squatâs help for two years ($1,040 total), then failing to transfer my data completely, to FINALLY finding THIS company, Computer Repair Plus, on 29th St. in Bryan.
Marc, and his wife, Yvonne, almost immediately responded to the request put out by Yelp asking about possible repairs for a water damaged laptop. It turns out that Computer Repair Plus is practically right around the corner! I am bedbound 24/7, so I needed to send my laptop with my home health aide, who basically speaks only Spanish when it comes to computers. They were so sweet! They were even willing to try to speak their limited Spanish! â¨â¨ We ended up speaking by phone while he looked at my computer. - NO APPOINTMENT needed, and he was busy with other repairs before we all talked. Still, he made time for us and told me that he would just replace the keyboard for $150! He was willing to stay late so that the weekend could be used for transporting the replacement keyboard and we didnât waste precious time.
Marc then checked and all my information was still intact on my hard drive! Everything was still there, including what hadnât been transferred before and I was afraid I had lost permanently (ALL my pictures, for one, and my homework for this semester). AAANNNDDD, Â the replacement keyboard will be in next week! So much for the going on to 3 weeks now with Worst Sell! Never again.
Marc and Yvonne have been very accommodating every step of the way. Knowing I will not have to go into debt because of something very careless and completely my fault has relieved the stress in my home exponentially. I feel very blessed to...
Read morePoor experience. It may have just been a series of unfortunate events but I had a very poor experience over all. I initially brought my laptop in to get the cracked screen replaced. The screen was replaced and given back to me but the work was not good looking with clear separation and glue that wasnt supposed to be there. I thought I could deal with the issue but after receiving my laptop back I immediately started to get software and hardware problems, ranging from constant crashes, my wireless pen no longer working (it worked on other devices but not on this laptop, my primary laptop and way of taking notes for school) and my gpu failing. These issues I had never had before but started right when I got it back from the shop. Bringing it back to the shop multiple times did not fix these problems, after an entire semester passed where i got behind on my research and classes due to not having a functional laptop, I was able to convince the store owner to purchase me a replacement laptop. This laptop was given to me with a cracked screen. I was told he was going to replace the screen but after trying to contact him for a month no progress was made. Going on in to the summer I have just been using this computer with a cracked screen, and have had no contact from the shop owner. When I would try to contact him he would just say that the he would contact me when the work could be done but it has again been months. Now after having this new laptop for only a few months the keyboard is starting to malfunction. Issues could have been talked about but the severely poor communication was a huge damper on it all. After much time, issues have been resolved. He did work to get everything...
