The Jim Gatchell Museum brings to life many aspects of life in this scenic area that have been hotly contested. The museum has wonderful works of art, set in historical context, with compelling narratives. Some of my favorites: 1. “She Who Saved Her Brother” bronze statue commemorating the astonishing bravery of a young Native American woman who road her horse into a battle (Rosebud Battlefield, Montana State Park), to save her brother whose horse had been shot from under him. That battle had more projectiles fired than any other engagement between Native Americans and the US military. 2. The “Johnson County War” ended when the hired killers were released on their honor (never to be seen again). The infamous “honor bond” story has largely been ignored, but it is the inconvenient truth. 3. The Jim Gatchell Museum brings together a host of historical collections for your enjoyment and inspiration. Behind the scenes, the Gatchell is knitting together the history of local people who shaped our communities through their actions. We are fortunate to have so many volunteers who dedicate their time!

We're always interested in learning history of the town we visit. Jim was a week known pharmacist in town. Thanks to the family for donating his collection and sharing the culture & history. The family donated the collection with the condition that it would be in a museum. The museum is the old library. If you have an hour to see the museum, it's loaded with history.

I was told by many people to make sure I went to this museum. It has a lot of good information and is fairly big but I found it to be pricey. I wish the exhibits felt less like an art gallery and more of an immersion into themes. Wyoming has so many wonderful museums and this was the most expensive offering the least new information to me on any particular subject.

Great place to learn a piece of history. Mr. Gatchell seemed like a nice person, and I liked he was friendly with the Native Americans. Other favorite section was the Native American galley. Facility is accessible for wheelchairs, which was perfect for our daughter who uses a special needs stroller. Staff were so helpful, attentive, and informative. Admission is very reasonable as well. Glad we stopped!...
