Dinner at The Virginian was okay. Nothing exceptional! Our waiter was young and seemed insecure. No big deal, probably just needs better training (that would be on management). On our way from dinner to visit the saloon we were walking to the door between the two and stopped to look at the jewelry case and a young gentleman staff member approached us and asked if we needed something. We said no we're fine we are just looking at the jewelry case on our way to see the saloon. He abruptly told us they have tours for that! We said okay....we just had dinner and were taking a second to look at the jewelry display on our way to the saloon. He became more stern with us and we asked if there was a problem with us looking at the display case. He stated his management tells them they have to say that. He got confrontational with us and he told us we didn't have to be mean. I then said we weren't, but he was. We walked on to see the saloon and walked on to the gift shop and then the hotel. When we walked down the hall looking at the walls of history he showed up again and started giving us a hard time again. I told him to leave us alone and walk away. We really were just trying to see the history of the place. He wouldn't stop! I asked to see his manager, hoping they could get him to leave us alone. He pointed to the lady behind the front desk and said that was his manager. I proceeded to try to tell her what had happened with him, but he kept talking over me and she wouldn't stop him to listen to me. She also said that management makes them tell everyone about the tour. At this point I couldn't care less about what management tells them to do, although if that is the case management needs to do a better job of teaching them how to say it nicely! The manager should have asked the staff member to stop interrupting me and walk away so she could hear me. She could have dealt with him later. Unfortunately, the manager did not do that so my guy tried to defend me and told him to shut up (I know...not a good choice of words). The manager then threatened to call the police on us. I could NOT believe how this escalated. Absolutely sad and ridiculous! She even said "I've never had a problem with him before". I wish I had said that is irrelevant...you have one now! That statement made me feel like I was being crazy. I felt attacked, unheard, and irrelevant. Such a horrible experience! I would strongly recommend that management look in to the Disney Customer Service Training they offer to help themselves and they're staff learn how to...
Read moreWe had plans to attend a family reunion in Buffalo August 8th-11th and we secured our lodging back in February. We were the only two able to acquire accommodations (much to our familyâs jealousy) and it did nothing but elevate our overall experience. We requested 3 different rooms when coordinating our stay and we were thrilled our first choice, the Nate Champion Suite, would be available to us. There was a disclaimer on the website regarding this room: You may enjoy the music from the saloon in this room up until 10:30 PM. We wanted the full-immersion experience so that did not deter us! If anything, we wanted it more! Itâs also right across the hall from the library that had a massive collection of books and a few games available. The Occidental doubles as a museum and we spent a fair amount of time taking in all the wonderful artifacts and rich history of the Occidental. Everything from the bell above the door in the lobby to the creaky wooden floors in the rooms to the bullet holes in the saloon make The Occidental a true treasure. The Occidental was conveniently located and we were within walking distance of everywhere we needed to be for our reunion as well as parks, restaurants and shops. The front desk staff was kind enough to give us a parking pass so we could park our car in front of the hotel (there is additional parking in the back via an alleyway). You wonât have all of the creature comforts youâd find in a modern hotel: you wonât have a mini-fridge or a coffee maker. Instead thereâs a shared fridge for guests (and a washer/dryer!) and a communal coffee pot at opposite ends of the second floor. I would recommend filling a coffee cup and then sip while you peruse the library or walk the halls and then refill your cup and continue taking in all The Ox has to offer, itâs the best way to start your day and learn a little history while youâre at it! We are planning our return trip and canât wait to once again be guests at The Historic Occidental Hotel.
Honorable mentions: The Busy Bee is a great breakfast spot (The Occidental French Toast is a must), Live Jam session Thursday nights with live music Friday and Saturday nights at the Saloon (have the flat iron steak/beef tips and noodles) and drive through Crazy Woman Canyon if you...
Read moreI am a local live nearby in Montana and I have stayed here about 10 times as this place is literally like walking back into the day it was built. So much nostalgia from all the famous people that stayed here and played in the bar next door. I am standing in the room that Emily the ghost frequents and standing next to all the orange tabby cats that were left by visitors along with tons of letters to her. Such a classy place and owned by a great bunch of folks that live next to the hotel to ensure it is always run up to par and keep nice for it's guests. The beds and pillows are so cozy and hanging out in the library that our former president Teddy Roosevelt sat in is a great experience. The haunted house that this hotel puts on is probably one of the best I have been to. Hopefully it will continue every year. Dave the owner plays in a band in the Occidental saloon most nights and is a great musical artist. I just can't say enough about this lovely gem that is off the beaten path next to the Bighorn mountains. The food at the super classy Virginian restaurant next to the bar is also part of this amazing experience and everyone needs to go see all that attracts me to keep coming back here as a local. I wish I could buy the place for myself maybe someday I will get lucky and do so. I highly recommend asking for the tour and ask to see the bullet holes in the wall and ceiling tiles....
