Given my experience I will preface with "all restaurants cut corners due to..." The elk bites weren't "bites" but apparently slices of elk. The slices were covered in an unusually sweet broth. I say broth because I expected a sauce. No. They were swimming in a sweet water. I tried to chew through them and I was reminded of when i chewed jerky as my dad showed me how to saw tree limbs. The "dumplings" on the menu were previously frozen and obvious. Show me a handmade dumpling and I will show every restaurant's dumpling bought from a distributor The prime rib was a disaster. Raw center medium middle and well done exterior. The prime rib doesn't deserve an explanation. The restaurant should be embarrassed

As their website states : "The Virginian restaurant at the Occidental Hotel is named after Owen Wister's immortal novel "The Virginian." " My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal and experience here; although the wine list could use improvement with more of a selection. We each ordered filet mignon wrapped in bacon with sides. The steaks were cooked to order perfectly and delicious. Dessert was cherry pie for my husband and creme brulee for me. We reserved a window seat, and it was very cozy and private. It's definitely a treat if you're in the area.

Excellent service!!! They serve your dinner as it’s supposed to be - bringing appetizers, bread, and entrees in order and allowing good 30 minutes in between, so you can talk. Allow for 2 hours to really enjoy this amazing dinner experience. Food is great, elk steak is to die for!

Wanted to eat at the Saloon, called for reservations and was told 5:45 would be great “IN THE SALOON”. Got there and was told only “fine” dining area was open to reservations. Fine we will eat at the Virginian. Service/Hostess/ Manager were in total disarray. Got seated and ordered beverages. After some time, drinks were ordered and apps and salads were ordered, 1 diner only wanted an entree. This threw the server for a loop, but with patience it was worked out. The salads were grilled romaine with mayonnaise and Parmesan cheese, (Caesar Salad), no garlic, anchovies or salt & pepper. The Elk “medallions” were stewed in butter and olive oil, certainly not “flash fried”. I ate half my salad and 1 of the elk medallions. The rest of my meal went back untouched. The potstickers were dry and under cooked, inedible. 3rd diner tried the same thing as me with similar effect. Finally the scallops, meh. The “peace de resistance” was when after 20+ minutes we finally got our check, which we were willing to pay for, so we could quietly leave. But alas, the manager sarcastically asked if there was a problem she could address. I politely said no, we just wanted our check, so we could pay it leave a tip and go. The manager pushed the issue again rudely at which time I informed the manager that the food was horrible and the service was lacking at best. The manager then attempted to engage my wife. My wife was told never to come back and that we were terrible guests and ate all of the food that was presented to our table. First time for everything, go north there are plenty of reputable and reasonable restaurants....

They really dropped the ball when we were there in early March to celebrate a family member's birthday. We had called ahead to arrange a surprise dessert to be delivered at the end of the meal. The special treatment was to be a secret. When we walked in, the staff immediately asked if we were the people who had reserved the table for a birthday celebration. Not a big deal, but not what we had in mind for the surprise celebration and dessert. What was really troubling, however, was that they didn't follow through. They took our dessert order and never brought out the special birthday dessert we had arranged! We had been assured ahead of time that everything was good to go and would be perfect. The food was hit or miss as well. My filet mignon tasted like it had very spicy "blackening" seasoning on it, and everyone's filet - normally a terrific cut of meat that should cut with a fork - was tough. Drink cups went without refills throughout the meal and service was generally slow and poor overall. This place has the potential to be nice, but given the high prices, should be providing significantly better food and service. We won't be going back. When you are in Buffalo, try Winchester's for much better food and service. Even Bozeman Trail - a less fancy establishment...

We came for our anniversary dinner and had high hopes based on the wonderful town and the restaurant reviews. We had reservations but were not greeted as we walked in, just kinda felt brushed off like they were too busy although there were only 4 others dining at that time. The hostess came and sat us without a warm welcome. Our waitress was nice but didn’t give the service you would expect from a “fine dining” establishment. My husband ordered the elk special ($55) that was suppose to come w asparagus. They gave him the vegetables. I ordered the bison special ($45) that came w mashed potato and asparagus. Our drinks were great. Cabernet and Moscow mule. But we were very sad about the meat. We are meat eaters, we eat elk and deer all year from our home, and expect it to be cooked well especially when paying such a high price. Ordered medium rare, they were both medium. It took a very long time to come out. Every time I’ve eaten bison it was tender and delicious and I eat every bit of it. I was so disappointed. I ate half because I was hungry but it just had a strange liverish taste and was tough. What a bummer for a...
