I spent lots of time in this park as a kid walking our dogs & enjoying the library next door. Now as a parent living & working downtown I’m afraid to walk near this park and I’m definitely not bringing my kids there. I’ve been yelled at when I didn’t have cash to offer and I’ve literally seen some of the homeless there going to the bathroom in broad daylight.I always gave money but after being called every nasty name under the sun and fearing for my safety, I no longer give money. Not to mention the drug paraphernalia. As a tax payer & lover of my city, the downtown mall is a rather small area and it’s the heart of our town. This park belongs to ALL OF US. How on earth the city thinks it’s ok to lift the park curfew and allow a tent city reminiscent of “Needle Park” is beyond me. What about your citizens right to enjoy the city parks safely and without navigating 20-30 tent encampments?? As a side note I think it’s shameful how much money this city spent tearing down the statue. Money that couldn’t been spent better ways only to leave a big ugly gaping dead pile of grass w/nothing in its place! FYI am a...
Read moreThe park is beautiful but unfortunately will always be an even worse part of history than in some peoples opinion of it already was. I remain neutral and love everyone but I will say that the statues are a part of our history that alot of people dont like. Then again there are statues in my home city of Richmond that are still standing and hope to continue to see more statues put up of historic Virginians. History is history. Its in the past and there is no gain erasing it. The real gain is learning from history and not making the same mistakes. Everyone has a different way they look at things and if we all agreed nobody would be different. Theres a difference in trying to make a difference but using the first amendment to schedule riots isnt the answer. This park should be renamed The Heather Heyer memorial park and have a statue of her in it now. Yes. The current statue is historic but I dont think he lived there and most likely never fired a bullet from that plot of land. It can be moved to a confederate site especially now that a woman gave her life for this park. I hope we all have a peaceful day and even more ahead. Always...
