I hate to share this incredibly distressing experience, but it's essential for others to be aware of what happened at this hospital. To say it was the worst experience I've ever had with any hospitalâor any business, for that matterâwould be an understatement. I wouldn't have thought it possible for any type of facility to operate with such a shocking level of unprofessionalism and disrespect of human rights and even the law. I couldn't even imagine this type of behavior towards a prisoner in a prison setting. The strongest best person I've ever met in my life was admitted after having a stroke because of an alarmingly sudden and severe staff infection. The severity of her condition was as life-threatening as it gets with very little chance of survival for her. She was terrified, she didn't know what was happening, and the hospital staff made it clear almost immediately that she would not be receiving the quality of care she needed. Because of her difficulty communicating the staff severely failed to understand her condition, making an already terrifying situation much worse. She recognize this, communicated a desire to transfer to a different hospital and the response and retaliation that followed was beyond horrifying. They quickly sedated her, falsified a report in many ways, declared her incompetent, and obtained a court ordered hold. What transpired next was not just unprofessional and a clear violation of her legal rights but downright shocking. The hospital staff continued to make unfounded accusations against her, her family and friends, securely tightening their hold on her as each day passed. Keeping her sedated as she laid there in fear fighting for her life. Some of the things they claimed were so demonstrably absurd it was like right out of a Hallmark made horror movie. I cannot stress enough how much paranoia and fear their actions caused to her and all of us. To think that anyone could be treated in such a dehumanizing way in a place meant for healing is mind-boggling. Soon she had a camera in her room and a monitoring bracelet on her ankle. Just two names I can mention are Jenn and Natalie. Some of their behavior was witnessed by me, recorded on our devices, and appalling in so many unbelievable ways. Instead of compassion and understanding, they exhibited an alarming level of disrespect that could not believed unless witnessed .Their actions were unforgivable. A few examples: they reported to the doctors she was starving herself as they kept her sedated through a meal times and then confiscated the food that she had delivered from restaurants and grocery stores in the area. They took away her personal belongings, jewelry and phone. Her visitor "privileges" were one of the first things to go, they made more absolutely unfounded and unprovable accusations. A camera followed her through the room, scolding her for every move she made (even partially closing the bathroom door so she could use the bathroom). it was most frightening time I have ever witnessed anybody endure. They laughed at and mocked her, stating she lacked the cognitive abilities to understand what was happening to her. they even confiscated her silverware. even after witnessing and recording it I still have a hard time believing the nightmare reality she had to endure. The audacity of the staffâand the blatant disregard for her dignity and rightsâwas nothing short of sickening. They subjected one of the kindest, most loving individuals I have ever known to the scariest thing I've ever witnessed. There are so many unbelievable details that transpired over the two months it took us five pages just to describe it all in the civil and legal complaint. I implore potential patients and their families to thoroughly consider their options before seeking treatment at this facility. we will make the recordings and evidence public after filing the civil and...
Read moreI have written 2 reviews on here about Mercy Hospital which I no longer see available to the public. I find that disturbing - about as disturbing as it would be if I ever found myself in the nightmare of being forced to utilize Mercy for anything further.
You see - I am somewhat different in that I had 4 bad experiences at Mercy within a year. Let me just say that one more time (4 experiences at Mercy in a 12 month time frame that were each as bad or worse than the time before)
Continually, they will simply tell you that "they are busy" and that should be an excuse for inadequate care. When did it become the patient's "problem" and "responsibility" to just accept being treated with disregard to standards of treatment and the law?
Seems that no matter what they do that isn't in line with treatment standards and laws (that they will charge for and expect payment for) is to be touted as "inadvertent" due to large volumes of patients.
When you put beds and chairs in the hallway of a busy ER exam area hallway and utilize them in lieu of exam rooms, how can it be inadvertent to overhear personal HIPPA information from the "exam" being conducted 2-3 feet away at best?
I was left sitting in a chair in that hallway for nearly 12 hours. I'm fairly convinced I might still be sitting there if I did not get up an leave. Having arrived at 7am and told by 11am that I would need to be hospitalized, I spent the rest of the day wondering how long I was going to sit under an A/C vent freezing while I waited for a hospital room that was apparently not available and not going to miraculously materialize.
I attempted to be patient but asked every few hours what was going on. At 4pm, I was told that I needed to be transported to another facility as they had no beds at Mercy. I could not drive myself, but they required I be transported by Ambulance. Yet, despite always being told a pat answer of 30 minutes out, that Ambulance transport never arrived. I was told by a very frustrated nurse who it seems was quite tired of me asking as he found it annoying, that "look lady, this is the new normal, get used to it". He then refused to even look in my direction. When I needed something, I had to grab a nurse walking by to ask her to to help me. When she asked why I didn't get my nurse, I let her know that he wouldn't look at me and walked the other way down the hallway if I tried to walk toward him. That was how I managed to get a meal during that 12 hours - to flag down passing staff and asking them to help.
At 7pm, completely worn out and stiff from sitting in the chair under the cold air for 12 hours, I asked one last time if they were going to transport me.
Told once again that it would be 30 minutes, I informed them that I was leaving. I was treated as if I were being ridiculous and had unrealistic expectations for care.
Personally, that was my last straw. I will never step foot in Mercy Hospital again. In fact, I have had to make a very difficult decision to forgo treatment for illness rather than subject myself to that.
If this is the "new norm", and that is all I can expect. I will no longer seek medical treatment. Somebody has to take a stand.
If you were hiring someone to put a roof on your home and they fully expected you to just "deal" with all of the ways they did not do the service by legal standards that they say they follow because they are just too busy to follow the law, you better stock up on buckets for the next...
Read moreMy care was substandard and abusive.
Following my angiogram with stents at Metropolitan Heart and Vascular Institute (MHVI), MHVI requested I stay overnight in Mercy Hospital. I was placed in a room on the 4th floor of the Mercy Hospital. I felt like I was in an old-time cassino. There were âthingsâ dinging all day and all night. Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. They were very loud. I asked the staff what that was, and if they could turn it off. Staff said thatâs a bell to let us know a patient has pushed their call button, and that they could not turn it off. Evidently patients on this floor are continually pressing their call button because this ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding never stopped. Not even at night. And I guess I understand why patients were pressing their call button because I had to push the call button just to get a drink of water. On top of that, there was the very frequent, long lasting and loud beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep of alarms for patient monitoring. It was impossible to relax with all this dinging and beeping. Closing my door didnât help. I ask for ear plugs. They helped a little but not nearly enough. Patients shouldnât have to wear ear plugs because the hospital dinging and beeping is so loud and continuous all day and all night. It was so loud I couldnât sleep. As I was trying to sleep, the staff were talking very loud in the hallway. Sounded like they were having a party. I ask one of the staff if they would ask them to quiet down. She came back and said she asked them to keep it down because they were disturbing patients, and she told me âtheyâre not going to do itâ. This is unacceptable behavior.
All of the staff caring for me had strong foreign accents. I had to ask them to slow down so I could understand. Most obliged. I ask one staff, in a kind manner, where she was from, trying to build rapport with her. She replied in a âsnottyâ tone, âWhere do you think Iâm fromâ. I stopped talking to her and stopped making eye contact with her. After all, I was relying on her as my âcare giverâ. Her tone of voice and attitude toward me was rude, mean and abusive.
I remember looking at the clock, as I was still trying to go to sleep, and it was past midnight and the dinging a beeping was still there, and still very loud. I feel asleep sometime after that. At 5:00 am a member of staff came in to my room, said she needed to weight me. WHY do I need to be weighted at 5am? Please tell me. I guess that three-four hours of sleep the night following my heart procedure was all Iâm allowed. At this point, my only objective was to get out of there. Sometime early that morning I texted my wife, asking her to come get me, that I was going to walk out. She convinced me to stay. She didnât realize at that time what a horrible place I was in. When I was discharged, I waited a long time for âtransportationâ to come wheel me to my wife, waiting at the front door. I gave up and walked out on my own, asking for directions along the way. Iâm pretty sure Iâll never voluntarily stay at Mercy Hospital ever again. Given that Iâm a senior citizen and was vulnerable having just undergone a heart procedure, the care I received was inadequate and abusive. I hope Mercy Hospital uses my experience to improve the level of care they provide. It was a terrible experience.
The care from MHVI was outstanding. Amazing, caring and talented staff at MHVI. Mercy Hospital, substandard...
