The store itself is kind of run-down looking with poor lighting and very quiet, but the selection is very surprising. You'd really be surprised at all the things you can find here if you dig hard enough. Almost every time I came with a niche request, they had it somewhere in their freezer that you just gotta dig through or the aisles - pork feet, clams, and quite importantly pork belly to make the crispy bbq pork belly thit heo quay. I come here for the head-on shrimp (you have to pick through the unfresh ones, there are a good amount of freshly defrosted good ones), Sichuan peppercorns, and niche Asian produce that I think only Hong Kong market has in all of Corpus Christi: lotus root, Chinese chives, winter melon, pomelo, and Thai chili sold in bulk (by the lb) rather than pre-packaged. If you're looking for an Asian sauce, they will have it most likely. The fresh noodles in the refrigerator look really good and tempting, but I've never had a need for them. I recommend trying. Sometimes, and I have no idea when, they get shipments of very large blue crabs. One time I just happened to come in when the shipment probably arrived earlier that day, and the crabs were huge, like 8 inches, and even though I prefer to catch them myself, I still bought 4. Better deal than Paul's Seafood. It's really rare though.
Some cons: there have been a few instances where the prices were different between the register and the shelf label. In fact, it's quite difficult to actually find the price at all on the shelf since many aren't labeled. I do not recommend the frozen seafood or frozen packaged foods like dumplings. They're all too old. A lot of other reviews say they are expired, but that's not accurate. They are past their "best-by" date, which is not expired, but definitely they are not fresh. Many of the frozen packaged foods are months after the "best-by" date and so even though they are safe, they don't taste good anymore and not worth it to buy.
Sometimes I'm a bit concerned about the financial health of the store as it seems like it's dying. The employees' tired and indifferent (not rude) attitudes make it seem that way as well. The younger tall Chinese man at the register is willing to find products that you can't find, he's a decent help. But I can't help but feel like business is not as good here. I always try to come for my niche produce when the rare occasion I need them arises, or the head-on shrimp, but who knows how long this place will last? There would be nowhere else to get a lot of those things. I hope they do some major remodeling/interior beautification so that business is reinvigorated. It seems like they just replaced their cabinet refrigerators on the left, which are also illuminated well, so that's a good start. Now with V-mart on the loose with a completely fresh freezer section, the competition has...
Read moreTuesday around 5:40p.m. We went in the Store and there was no one to be seen inside. We walked in and went to the egg roll section in the back to check how much the egg roll cost. 10 minutes past and still no one around to help us or to see what we needed. So we walked back the the front where the. Cashier area. A small Chinese elderly lady wearing a green apron just walked in and my wife approached her to ask her what the price of the egg rolls were. She was very rude! She didn't answer my wife. She looked at my wife up and down and said SPUUWD!!! Then the lady left my wife there looking puzzled! My wife turned and heard someone coughing behind the counter and a tall young china guy had been asleep all the time till he heard the old Chinese woman say loudly to my wife SPUUWD!!! That's when he woke up and stared at my wife. My wife approached him and she asked him for what were the prices of the egg rolls and he stayed silent for a little bit and didn't answer. I had to step in and ask him. Do you speak English? He answered me. Yes I do. Then I asked him what was the problem. Why hadn't he answer my wife question instead ignoring her? Then he said ok let's go see the prices of the egg rolls because they aren't priced right they are priced wrong. The old Chinese lady saw us again in the back of the store where the egg rolls were and again said, Loudly to our direction SPUUWD!!! We will never come back to this store ever again for very rude Chinese woman that works there and poor service Clerk was sleeping on the job very...
Read moreI love to cook but asian food has always been difficult due to the lack of variety in local grocery stores in Corpus but Hong Kong market fixed that problem! These guys carry some really wonderful items from all over Asia. It's really impressive when it comes time to recreate some amazing asian dishes. I had no idea there were so many different kinds of noodles both dry and frozen and each will make all the difference in the world when try to create authentic dishes. Gotta visit this place to appreciate it!
Oh, almost forgot...I am a total rice hound! I love all the varieties of rice and the price can't be beat! They have Basmati, Jasmine, Thai cargo, and about 10 other varieties I've never heard of but am willing to try. The staff at the check out is willing to tell you what the products you're buying are used for and will help if you need it.
By far the most enjoyable find has to be the Nuygen Coffee from Vietnam. The French definitely left their mark on that country with the coffee! That is easily the best coffee I've had the chance to try. Even with our Corpus water this coffee is outstanding! Don't...
