I had my wedding reception here. It really is a beautiful location and building. Old marble, large spaces.
But I have a few complaints. The bathrooms didn’t work on my wedding day, and they didn’t notify me that a portapotty would be replacing it. They already need to fix the bathroom situation as they are outside, open to the public and gross. The the beauty of the building and price point there should be indoor bathrooms, and I shouldn’t have had to use a portapotty in my wedding gown...especially when no one told me ahead of time. Another thing is when we were taking pictures outside of the building, two park patrol came over all hot and yelled at us telling us we needed a permit and couldn’t take pictures there. Clearly these guys were just trying to harass us as we rented the whole venue and our wedding was happening actively. It was very rude of them and they actually were going to write me a ticket for taking photographs at my own wedding because they didn’t “think” I was supposed to be there? I told them they needed to leave because I rented the whole facility, and then they scuffed off. Power tripping.
Another reason they get low stars is the events department is super unorganized and mismanaged. Ian was great to work with, if you are having an event there only work with him, he should be running that department. Everyone else there was a headache. Don’t expect to get through on your first call, I had to leave several messages to get anything done or questions answered, it really seemed like they thought they were doing me a favor by letting me pay to have my wedding there... super unprofessional. They told me several different stories about times I had booked and requirements I had to abide by and then they would make changes themselves because they overbooked or mismanaged. They told me I had to have my rehearsal on Friday, then Saturday and then later on Saturday. They changed it three times on me but then when I called and asked if we could go at specifically 4 pm because I needed an exact time for my wedding party, they acted like they were doing me a favor then they changed it originally. Also they make you set up and tear down in your rented time, which gives you hardly enough time for an event.I also rented out the conservatory garden for my ceremony, it was so rushed because we only had 2 hours to set up, have a wedding and take down. It was absolutely ridiculous and the only reason is because they want to have three weddings a day at the same exact location back to back. That is stupid and greedy. They also provide absolutely nothing other than tables and chairs (which are hideous). They let you rent it for 8 hours for the total event. Meaning if your event starts at 3 and goes till 11 then you have no time to clean up or tear down and they won’t let you keep it there unless you pay $100 an hour. The whole experience was frustrating, although my wedding came out beautiful, I would go to the DIA or a different venue next time because the staff and restrictions are frustrating and you may end up with...
Read moreThey really need to make this island into something. I don't know what's going on with the city of detroit, get those toll booths back up and running so people have to pay to be on the island, that way it will actually beautify it, do something with this casino put like restaurants and food or something in here, make it like a food court with cool stuff you know.. you can have a food court on level one and a bar on level two
Get that zoo opened back up and cleaned up and functional, and get all these beautiful gardens open so people can walk around in them and if you want to make sure that the Riff Raff don't destroy and spray paint or scrape their initials into everything, that's why you open the toll booths up, because the riff Raff certainly aren't going to want to pay tolls to get...
Read moreWe had our wedding in this venue and are highly satisfied with everything. The venue is beautiful, with plenty of ornate decorations indoors, nicely partitioned veranda (perfect for setting up food, photo booth, entertainment, etc), and two floors to accommodate more elaborate programs. The immediate outside has beautiful arches for seating and photographs. The staff are friendly and easily reachable. To make things more appealing, this was one of the most affordable venues we looked at. Our guests had a great time and were able to come early and explore Belle Isle attractions which was a treat (especially for those from out-of-state). Highly...
