Biking Detroit: Riverwalk to Belle Isle 🚴♀️☀️
We couldn’t have asked for a better October day in Michigan — sunny, 70s, and that perfect crisp fall air. We hopped on our bikes in Lafayette Park and rode all the way to Belle Isle and back, totaling about 12 miles round trip. It was the kind of ride that reminds you how much more you see when you’re on two wheels instead of four.
Along the way, Detroit absolutely showed off: 🏛️ The Dossin Great Lakes Museum 🌿 The Belle Isle Nature Center 🐠 The historic Aquarium 🏖️ A peaceful beachfront view ⛵ The iconic Detroit Yacht Club ⛳ And somehow… I just realized there’s a golf course on the island!
The bike lanes were well-maintained and felt safe, with plenty of spots to stop, rest, and take in the riverfront views. We went on a Thursday, so things were quiet — perfect for a relaxing ride, but we recommend bringing your own water and snacks, as we didn’t spot any open concessions or water stations. (They might be there, we just didn’t find them.)
On the way back, we made a “quick” stop at Atwater Brewery for some water… which turned into watching the Tigers game and splitting a GIANT soft pretzel 🥨 (no regrets).
Pro tip: If you haven’t explored Detroit by bike, especially the Riverwalk and Belle Isle, put it on your list. It’s the perfect blend of city, nature, and unexpected discoveries.

Read moreThis was my first trip to Belle Isle in 3 years. It was a beautiful summer day on July 4th weekend. There was a long line to get on this State Island Park, formerly a City of Detroit park. I have been coming here my entire life more than 60 years. Things have changed, mostly for the better. You now need a State of Michigan Recreation Pass to enter. Today was so busy the entrance sentry waived everybody through. My first observations are how clean the park now is. As far as I could observe all comfort stations are now open and very clean! Scott Fountain was so clean and beautiful I hardly recognized this iconic Detroit landmark! The beach is so nice and clean and family oriented that it was heart warming! Young children, ice cream truck and umbrellas abound!🌞The last time I was here the island was swarming with Michigan State Police cars pulling people over in mass. Today I did not see a single State Police officer, however I saw an inordinate amount of Michigan Conservation Officers, lights flashing and quite imposing. Obviously, we want a park where there is a presence of law enforcement, but it goes too far when you feel like a police state. All in all a very pleasant experience looking at Canada, the Detroit River, the freighters and...
