This bridge has so much history and yet most will never know it. Some of which is its dark history with suicide and death. The Detroit Free Press' Detroit Almanac, stated that in 1935, 87 people had leaped from the bridge to their deaths, a sum no doubt aggravated by the Great Depression, which hit Detroit especially hard. The problem was so acute that the Detroit Police Department instituted a "suicide squad" to scout the bridge for potential jumpers. In 1938 alone, 15 would-be jumpers were saved. Another hotly debated historical moment for the bridge's history is when Harry Houdini jumped from it back on Nov. 27th 1906 as one of this famous stunts. The jump happened, but it's the details over whether he was trapped under the ice nearly dying seem to be just fiction as reported by Detroit News and many other sources.
