This is a Yankee style flea market in what us year-rounders know doesn't quite belong, yet here it is! It's a Yankee affair as many of the vendors are snowbirds as we were prior to moving to the Valley permanently a half dozen years ago. You won't hear Spanish spoken here in contrast to flea markets in Alamo, Mercedes or Brownsville.
So, then, what can you expect to find in Weslaco's version?
Well, to begin with, there are opportunities to mingle with some wonderful strangers. This might seem odd until you're there. You see...people-traffic consists largely of temporarily displaced individuals seemingly out of their usual haunts and it shows. Total strangers are so open to a chance moment of friendship, it can be quite striking. And joyful, too.
We went there today for sport shirts. Twice this season I bought a couple. These are very high quality super light-weight men's attire made to keep you comfortable and sweat-free in Summer heat.
A month ago I bought two very light jackets with detail you'd have to spend $50 to obtain anywhere north of here. I got two for $15! Today's shirts cost $5 for three, and very nice colors. I bought six as I know how amazingly confortable they are.
This is a great place to find all sorts of hard-to-find hardware crucial to trailer maintenance (this is home to snowbirds). And there's lots of very old, used hardware, too.
A small number of vendors offer all sorts of fruits and veggies. Two weeks ago I bought an eight pound head of cauliflower..... incredibly huge and excellent eating! $2!!!
However, the Alamo flea market is the place to visit for produce as the deals are not to be believed...as in a box of nine mangoes for $2 and mid-sized pineapples for $1 and often 2 for a dollar!
Don-wes also features live country and Western musicians with plenty of benches and tables for easy listening. And you can buy barbequed meats and sides on the cheap.
Really, you cannot go wrong here...low prices, great people and comfortable ambience. So much to like in an environment with folks hungry to find social connection. I hope...
Read moreI have lived in rhe valkey over a year this was my first visit... what got me there was the car show.
Next year, management should create a scavenger hunt for participants where they get a stamp for visiting various booths throughout the market.
Looks lije they arw still recovering from the 2022 fire. I went for the 3rd annual car show. It was a small show the two high dollar cars were an out of state plated Tesla X daily driver... and a glorious Roadrunner. There were other great cars a 1957 chevy and a long and low Chrysler... a few motorcycles, great looking cars. Inconceivable I lost my mind and did not take pictures, apologies.
The Wisconsin handscooped ice cream looked great...
I will go next year again... maybe have something to show... Hope to...
Read moreI'm new here (back in July 2022) and this was my first visit. Looks like a very good flea market. This is the off-season, so not much open, but the vendors that were there were very friendly cheerfully and helpful. I look forward to checking it out during the busy season. I'm back! Most all are closing soon for the season, but I'm thinking it will start back up next season better than ever! Recommendations: Nuts on Wheels (we bought 4 bags of various), Bob's Bargains, Blue Bell ice cream ( they have more than ice cream we bought bamboo sheets too), Hinkle Screen Prints (shirt place I bought 4), and Red Cedar Signs by Henry Jr. (great recommendations from many people and much cheaper than others I checked into, Henry did my HM sign and exceeded my picky...
