Grocer's Daughter Chocolate Shop — Local services in Empire Township

Such a cute place with nice and knowledgeable staff. We purchased half dozen individual candies and a bar. I don't mind paying $2.50 per candy as fine chocolate is worth the cost. Unfortunately they all tasted good but basically all tasted the same and didn't taste like the intended flavor profile. The heart shaped, Michigan maple with smoked sea salt and the coconut caramel both tasted like plain chocolate truffles. Absolutely no maple flavor and no trace of coconut or caramel flavor in the other. There was a hint of cherry in the cherry port and hint of bourbon in the bourbon whiskey. If you go into it knowing they all taste the same you won't be disappointed. The $10 candy bar is a gift for someone. I hope that redeems the tasting experience. These guys take great pride in their work, and it shows in every facet of my visits here. I've sampled about 75% of their offerings over the past few years, and I haven't tried anything that I'd rate less than 5/5. And as if the chocolate being world-class wasn't enough, it's also sourced with great consideration! Ask about their grower/supplier to get the full story, but suffice to say that if the support and empowerment of women (especially in less egalitarian countries) is important to you, you'll be glad you stopped in. It's like a win, win, win, win situation that ends with you getting some of the best chocolate you've ever had in your life.

This place was such a pleasant surprise. Their chocolates are beautifully handmade and come in fun shapes (I particularly loved the sleeping bear shape!). If you are hesitant because of the higher prices, there are plenty of small chocolate bars that you can try, starting around $2 or so. I got a 70% dark chocolate and was blown away by how smooth it was. Truly, this is good chocolate. I love that they are committed to ethical practices too. In the cafe next door, I got a cup of the vegan drinking chocolate and a sorbet. The drinking chocolate is REALLY good. I am almost never wowed by hot chocolate from a cafe, but this is different.
