I am the owner of Fifth Dimension Martial Arts Academy and I have attended the WTBA Seminars hosted by CPAMMA since I began training with Ajarn Chai Sirisute. The facility is clean, easily located, and run by a friendly and welcoming staff. CPAMMA hosts numerous seminars throughout the year bringing in some of the best instructors from around the country. I highly recommend training with CPAMMA whether you're looking for a local place to train or just looking to further your training through one of their awesome seminars!

Absolutely love CPAMMA!! They're always so kind and welcoming, and always kick my butt! An organization I'm a part of at Penn State (CHAARG) attends a class every semester and it's always a highlight for both myself and the entire group. I always feel so empowered and strong, even though I'm trying something completely new and unfamiliar to me. I highly recommend the coaches and classes! Can't wait to return! Returned today and once again had a blast! Thank you Ashlyn and Elise!

This year I was able to visit for a Dog Brother's camp for the second time. Awesome facility, great atmosphere, and great instruction. They are in a really good central location for the North East region. Very easy to find. If I lived in the area, this would be my home away from home. They are always bringing in quality martial artists for seminars and stand alone as a great place to train. I look forward to more visits in the future.

This review is solely for parents looking at enrolling their children in the youth martial arts program. I cannot speak for any of the adult programs. My son attended the youth martial arts program for almost a year.

Training: The technical training seemed fine and my son really enjoyed it. Elise is very patient and good with the kids. They taught basic skills, life lessons, and had time at the end of each class for a game. The kids do not spar. The structure is very consistent with only a few changes in terms of which moves are practiced and the game played. The class is structured so that the kids are not supposed to talk unless asking a question and there is very little interaction between kids during class (except for the game at the end). This type of training just depends on what you are looking for. I was wanting my son to make friends he could grow with in class but he really didn’t get to know anyone. He knows their faces but they are only allowed to enter class right before it starts and they need to leave right after due to an incoming adult class. It does not allow for much kid interaction.

Financial: The price is good but they really are focused on the bottom line and don’t care about any personal issues that arise. All the other reviews on this are pretty accurate. When you set up the free trial, they bug you incessantly about BOTH parents being there to make the decision. They do make you decide on the spot or you can’t come back (which seems like shooting yourself in the foot financially). My son developed an inguinal hernia (not class related) during training and could not train for a little over 2 months with surgery and recovery. The most I was allowed to do was pause his membership but you have to have 30 day advance notice to pause and then you have to be out for a full 2 months (keep in mind you would still be paying a fee, just reduced). It’s hard to have 30 day notice when there are medical issues. So we had to pay for basically 2 months we could not use the gym. After leaving, I am also paying for an additional 2 months due to the 30 day notice policy. So basically I have paid for over 4 months of training that we could not use. Kind of offsets a little bit lower price.

Parent Interactions: This is by far where I have the biggest issue. When we originally signed up it was stated to us that we were allowed to watch class but could not be present during testing. They have a designated spectator area with couches and bleachers. For basically the whole time my son attended class we have always had a parent present since we live too far to drive home. We never interfered with class in any way. Right before we left (and the cause for us leaving) my husband was approached by one of the head instructors (which we were not familiar with) and told he was not allowed to be there as they have a no spectator policy. Apparently they do not want parents sitting or waiting in the gym during class. I suspect this started with COVID and they just like not having parents there and so want to continue. Anyways, they basically told us we could no longer sit in his class (which is not an option for us) and so we discontinued our membership. If you are looking for a martial arts program that makes you feel like a valued part of your kids’ lives and/or training then this is NOT for you. Since our experience we have learned from multiple other sources that they are known for not being parent friendly. I would have to agree.

UPDATE: In regards to CPA MMA’s response. I have read all the negative reviews and saw that they have a habit of responding to negative reviews by trying to discredit the person making the review. Their narrative of my husband is completely false and being spun in a way to discredit my review. Please be very wary of any place that cannot handle criticism without trying to completely tear down the person giving it. We were the ones that were completely disrespected, not them. I’m sorry, but based off of this response to my review, I cannot recommend...

CPA MMA not only has a "No Parents Allowed" policy, but they have repeatedly shown a willingness to attack and malign anyone who disagrees with them.

When we signed up, we were explicitly told that we could watch our child during classes except when they were testing. For over nine months, my wife, my mother, and I would take our child to class, and then sit in the section we'd been told we could sit at. Every time I went, I would sit quietly and read a book or work on my laptop.

I was approached twice to leave. The first time, they told me they were testing, but told me I could move to a different part of the building, out of sight of the kids. I did so willingly and without complaint.

The second time, several months later, I was told to leave. I asked why, and when they explained they were testing, I said "okay" and immediately left the building. I will fully admit I probably looked anxious. I hadn't expected to be kicked out and it caught me off guard. But I never argued and left the building without complaint.

The third time, a male instructor I'd never met before (who I now know is Ryan Gruhn), approached me and told me parents weren't allowed in the building. I was confused, because I'd never heard of the policy before (except for testing, which they weren't doing). When I questioned him about it, he told me that the next class I would have to drop my child off and leave the building. I told him we would probably cancel our membership, because it is important to us as parents that we be able to observer our children in all their activities.

If you want to find this "No Parents Allowed" policy, you have to search carefully on their website. It's not on their policy pages, nor in any of their FAQs, nor in their program descriptions (all of which we read). It's in their Announcements section (the place where they announce upcoming events and changes). However, they emailed these same Accouncements without the "No Parents Policy", so it never occurred to us that we would have to look on their website to find a policy we knew nothing of.

This is the policy I unwittingly violated for almost a year, without ever knowing it existed. I was only ever told that I couldn't be in the building during testing.

That night, I received a hostile email accusing me of repeatedly defying both staff and policy, and accused me of acting belligerent and disrespectful toward women.

I'll admit. That shook me. I don't recall ever treating anyone with disrespect, and it bothers me that may have inadvertently done so.

We cancelled our membership, and my wife wrote a balanced 3-star review (since demoted to 1-star after their response). From our point of view, we never had issues with the staff we interacted with. While we now prefer our current Martial Arts studio, we would have continued with CPAMMA were it not for their no-parents-allowed policy and their hostile emails.

In the end, it is their repeated attempts to attack my character and paint me as some kind of dangerous person that drove me to write this review. I would argue such aggressive attacks are a troubling sign. Be wary. They claim to respect others, then do everything in their power to malign those who disagree with them.

-- Update & Response --

Ignorance is not defiance, and the private emails you blasted on the internet shows I had no idea of the policy.

Both times I was asked to leave/move, I did. I never argued. I only asked why and when I was told it was due to testing, I immediately complied with their request (and the policy as I knew it). Once the full policy was clarified, I fully complied with it as well. I never confronted them or tried to intimidate anyone.

And of course I apologized for making anyone uncomfortable, even if it was unintentional. It's basic human decency to apologize for causing others discomfort, not an admission of guilt.

CPA MMA is fully willing to release private emails in an attempt to gas light someone. This is not the behavior of someone who...

I've got a lot to say here. If you want the short version I can give it to you in three words:

I love this gym.

If you want to read more than that, I would be more than happy to relay the longer version but I have to keep it short because of word count limit.

I am a guy in his upper 30’s with accumulated injuries from a lifetime of martial arts and aggressive strength training. Being so, one day I had made a point of telling myself that martial arts was a game for younger folks and something that I should stay out of entirely. I just wanted to forget about martial arts, altogether, forever.

Didn't work. It was too much apart of me. I had decided to try Brazilian Jiujitsu (BJJ).

I've done BJJ before but if I was going to train again, but this time I made myself a promise that I would do this seriously, no quittin'. But I didn't know if this would be for me. I wasn't 20 anymore and I had a list of injuries, any one of them I thought would be a deal breaker. I ended up at CPAMMA and found the environment to be warm and welcoming.

After my first class was finished and I expected to be a wreck the next morning. I wondered which of my nagging injuries would yell at me first.... but nothing did. I was fine. Sure I had a bruise from where someone got overly ambitious from a lapel grip but that was about it. Didn't matter. I could do this. That was the important part.

After about 18 months of consistent training I was awarded my blue belt. It was a fantastic experience. It was exhilarating and difficult to articulate in words. I stopped feeling confused about what I was doing in BJJ and people started coming to me and asking questions. Some of these questions had to do with what it was like to compete. The problem is that I've never competed... not in Judo... and not here.

Well... it was pretty obvious what needed to be done. Regardless of how I felt about it, I had to get out there on the mats, in front of everybody and face an opponent of equal skill and experience. I wasn't crazy about the idea, but I knew that it was the right decision.

When I began training for the tournament, I started to really feel the team environment. Sure, I'd felt that way in class, but we really came together when we were going to the tournament together. People were telling me how to beat their game. I would tell them the tools and techniques that shut me down. That's a team. We all were willing to open up our toolboxes of techniques to each other and freely let people take what they wanted. We were a team.

The tournament was an amazing experience. We all came together. We all cheered for each other, we all coached each other. We shared in each other's wins and losses and in the end we learned, we had fun, and we made a ton of new friends.

This was the part of my life that I wanted to give up a few years ago. I would have missed this experience. I would have missed all of this. I should have come here a long, long time ago. I intend to keep the promise that I made to myself years ago: "Once I start doing this again... I ain't quittin'..."

And I...
